대학에 입학하자마자 엄마가 교통사고로 중태에 빠지자 슬픔에 잠긴 ‘샤오링’은 갑작스레 시공을 초월해 1981년으로 돌아간다. 하늘에서 갑자기 뚝 떨어진 샤오링이 덮친 건 젊은 시절의 어머니 ‘리환잉’이다. 우연인 듯 아닌 듯 맞닥뜨린 두 사람은 단짝 친구 같은 사촌 자매지간이 된다. 엄마가 변변치 못한 자기 때문에 불행한 삶을 살았다는 자책감에 시달렸던 샤오링은 젊은 시절의 엄마 리환잉을 행복하게 해주기 위해 온갖 일을 벌인다.
