루마니아의 한적한 시골교정에서 줄넘기를 하던 6세의 나디아를 벨라와 부인 마티는 가능성을 믿고 체조 선수로 키운다. 첫 시합에서 고전한 나디아는 벨라 선생의 끊임없는 지도로 1976년 올림픽 파견 대표선수로 선발된다. 그러나 체육관계자들의 독선에 의해 벨라 선생의 완고함으로부터 해방 된 나디아는 나태해져 연습 스케줄을 엉망으로 만든다. 그녀는 실의에 빠져 음독자살을 기도하는 등의 좌절이후 벨라 선생을 다시 찾아 간다. 선수권 대회를 5주 앞두고 실시된 강훈련에 의해 나디아는 결국 금메달과 은메달을 따내게 된다. 79년의 텍사스 대회에 참가키위해 연습하던 나디아는 손목의 부상에도 불구하고 참여, 만점에 가까운 점수를 획득하여 루마니아팀의 승리에 기여한다.
