뉘른베르크 전범재판은 2차세계대전에서 승리한 연합국이 주체가 되어 패전국 독일이 제3제국의 이름으로 저지른 반인도적 행위에 대해 개인적 책임을 추궁한 역사적 사건이다. 2차대전을 일으킨 독일이 연합군의 힘에 밀려 참패하자 연합군은 전범들을 재판하게 된다. 이영화에서 다루는 피고는 전쟁당시 재판관들이다. 미국측 재판관 헤이우드는 독일군 고위층 부부가 살던 대 저택에 머물게 되는데 이집의 전 여주인을 알게 된다. 그리고 전쟁후 남편이 독일군이었다는 이유로 미국인에 살해당한 이 부인을 만나면서부터 독일군들이 인도주의적 정신보다는 나라에 대한 충성심을 더 강요받았다는 사실을 깨닫게 된다. 재판이 진행되는 동안 시종일관 침묵으로 일관하던 피고 언스트 야닝은 나중에야 자신과 동료들의 부정 부패를 고발하고 그것을 알고도 침묵했던 자신이 가장 사악한 사람이라며 자신의 잘못을 고백한다. 헤이우드는 전쟁이라는 상황과 비인도적인 판결을 내릴 수밖에 없었던 독일 재판관들의 입장을 고뇌하다 사형대신 종신형을 선고하는데...

닉은 외국에서 돈을 벌어 오랜만에 고향으로 돌아온다. 기분 좋게 부모와 애인인 폴리를 만나지만 아버지의 다리가 불구인 것을 알고는 놀라는데 샌프란시스코의 과일도매상까지 토마토를 트럭으로 운송하고 마이크에게 팔았는데 그가 권해주는 술에 취해 정신을 잃은 후 트럭사고로 다리를 잃은 것이다. 아버지는 기억이 없다지만 돈조차 받지 못했다고 주장한다.성난 닉은 전 재산을 털어 아버지의 트럭을 인수하기로 한 에드와 함께 사과를 사서는 샌프란시스코까지 운송하기로 한다.에드의 도움으로 36시간을 운전해서 샌프란시스코에 도착한 닉은 녹초가 되는데 피글리아가 닉의 사과를 탐내며 접근하는데 싼값에 그에게 팔 마음이 없는 닉, 그러자 피글리아는 거리의 여자인 (그렇다고 창녀는 아니고 그저 거리에서 거칠게 살아가는 여인) 리카에게 돈을 주고 닉을 유혹하라 시키고는 그 틈에 사과를 훔치려 한다. 하지만 리카는 차츰 닉이 좋아지고 닉에게 피글리아가 사과를 훔치려 함을 일러주어 오히려 닉은 큰돈으로 사과를 팔게 된다.닉은 신이 나서는 폴리에게 전화해 결혼하러 샌프란시스코로 오라고 한다. 리카는 살짝 질투심을 느끼지만 태연한 듯 말하기를..폴리와 자신의 공통점은 모두 돈을 좋아한다는 것이라고..하지만 닉은 리카는 프로지만 폴리는 아마츄어라고 답한다..리카는 닉이 좋지만 차마 표현하지 못한다.한편 닉을 뒤좇아 오던 에드는 낡은 트럭 탓에 사고가 나서 죽고 마는데 거기다가 닉은 피글리아의 부하들에게 얻어맞고는 사과를 판 돈을 모두 빼앗긴다. 그런 닉을 보살피는 리카. 결국 샌프란시스코에 온 폴리는 닉이 돈을 모두 잃었음을 알자 그냥 닉을 떠난다.

The story is given timeliness by placing the characters on a British merchant ship on the very day that World War II is declared. The ship is attacked by a Nazi U-Boat, resulting in a variety of reactions from the diverse passengers--one of whom (Erwin Kalser) is a German doctor. Constance Bennett is glamorous, Pat O'Brien is boozy, John Halliday is pensive, and everybody else (except for the German medico) is plain fearful.

축제로 들썩이는 파리 시내, 아름다운 집시 여인 에스메랄다가 사람들 앞에서 춤을 춘다. 노트르담 대성당에서 아름다운 종소리가 울려 퍼지게 하는 종지기인 꼽추 콰지모도도 에스메랄다의 모습에 반한다. 루이 11세와 함께 축제에 참석했던 대법관 프롤로 역시 에스메랄다에게 마음을 빼앗긴다. 그리고 이들을 둘러싼 비극의 서막이 오른다. 프랑스의 대문호 빅토르 위고가 루이 11세 치하의 15세기 파리를 배경으로 쓴 소설을 영화화했다. 중세 파리와 노트르담 대성당을 재현한 세트는 거대하고 웅장하다.
