미국의 한적하고 평화로운 마을에 우주로부터 이상한 빛이 떨어지면서 그 마을은 평온을 잃어버린다. 한밤중에 강렬한 섬광과 함께 마을을 급습한 강풍에 가옥이 불타고 갖가지 사고가 발생하지만 일시적인 자연현상으로 생각한 주민들은 그 문제를 심각하게 생각치 않는다. 그러나 이때부터 아무도 예상치 못했던 악몽이 시작된다.
