1983년, 스포츠에 집착하는 호주는 항해의 욕망을 애국심으로 둔갑시키며 관객들을 흥분시키는 매력적인 요트경주에 푹 빠져있었다. 같은 시절, 멜버른 노동 계층의 게임은 덜 화려하고 훨씬 위험했다. 변변치 않은 직업을 가진 주인공 레이 곁에는 도박중독인 계부와 감옥을 빈번히 드나드는 출옥한 친구가 있다. 제어가 되지 않는 의붓아버지의 도박 빚으로 인해 어머니가 협박을 당하는 지경에 이르자, 그는 콘돔 속에 넣은 1키로의 헤로인을 잔뜩 삼켜 직접 운반책이 되는 아이디어가 꽤 괜찮은 돌파구라고 생각하게 된다. 하지만 제대로 흘러가는 듯이 보이던 레이의 계획은 자연현상으로 인해 운반책이 스스로의 유죄를 입증하길 기다리는 완고한 경찰을 만나게 되면서 꼬여버린다. 이 뜨끈뜨끈한 느와르는 구제 불능한 인생과 범죄에 대한 호주 영화 특유의 매혹을 보여주며, 거북한 웃음을 짓게 만드는 어둡고도 코믹한 구석 또한 갖추고 있다. 자신만의 덜 떨어진 스크린 속 페르소나를 구축한 앵거스 샘슨은 이에 기초한 연기를 보여주며, 토니 마호니는 공동 연출을, 시리즈를 탄생시킨 레이 완넬과는 공동 각본가로 이름을 올리며, 모든 역할을 훌륭하게 소화해내고 있다.

The King is the story of Graham Kennedy, Australia's first and greatest home grown TV superstar. It traces his rise from working class Balaclava kid, through radio, TV, film, and back to TV again. It also tracks Kennedy's personal tragedies - the loneliness, the unrealised ambitions and the terrible pressures of being Australia's first homegrown superstar in the 1950s and 60s.

여러 곳을 다니고 싶어하는 호주인 지질학자 샌디는 한 일본인 샐러리맨의 방문으로 그녀의 소원을 이루게 된다. 상사의 명령에 따라 일본인 히로미츠가 호주 광산을 둘러보도록 사막 지대를 운전하여 안내하게 된 것이다. 하지만 그녀는 히로미츠를 무례하고 말이 안 통하는 성차별주의자라고 생각하고 마찬가지로 히로미츠는 샌디를 시끄럽고 공격적이며 매력 없는 여자라고 생각한다. 둘 사이의 문화적인 충돌은 히로미츠가 예정에 없이 더 외진 지역으로 안내해 줄 것을 고집하면서 더욱 깊어진다. 그 안내의 결과는 재앙이지만 외딴 모래 기둥들 사이에 고립되면서 둘 사이에는 특별한 유대감이 싹튼다.

차퍼(chapper: 도끼)라는 별명을 얻을 정도로 잔인하고 폭력적인 마크 리드는 범죄를 통한 자기만족과 우월의식에 쌓여있는 인물이다. 호주 멜버른의 한 교도소에 수감되어 있는 마크는 계획적으로 다른 죄수들과 잔혹한 파워 게임을 벌여나가지만 , 추종자들을 얻기는 커녕, 점점 더 경원과 멸시의 대상이 되어가고, 심지어 가장 친한 친구 지미에게까지 공격받기에 이른다. 생명의 위협을 느낀 마크는 한 동료를 부추겨 자신의 귀를 베어버리게 한 후, 다른 감옥으로 이감된다. 그리고 얼마 후 석방이 된 마크는 인간 쓰레기를 소탕해야된다는 망상에 사로잡힌 채 곳곳을 돌아다니며 잔혹한 살인 행각을 계속한다. 이처럼 사실과 환상의 경계를 오가며 세상과 부믿치던 마크는 결국 다시 감옥에 들어가게 되는데, 이때부터 타고난 이야기 실력을 발휘하여 자신의 삶과 범죄 행각에 대한 책을 쓰기 시작한다. 자서전이 출판되면서 마크는 드디어 명성과 부를 거머쥐고, 호주 사회의 전설적인 범죄자라는 악명을 얻기에 이른다.

선천적으로 앞을 못보는 마틴(Martin: 휴고 위빙 분)은 병약한 홀어머니 밑에서 성장하는데 자신이 장애아이기 때문에 어머니가 자신을 미워하고 미워하기 때문에 자기에게 진실을 말해주지 않고 모든 걸 속인다고 오해한다. 이처럼 심각한 피해 의식은 젊은 나이에 요절한 어머니의 죽음마저도 자기를 버리고 떠나기 위해서 조작된 거짓말이라고 믿게 만든다. 세상의 모든 걸 불신하는 마틴은 주위 사람들이 자신을 속이지 못하게 보이지는 않지만 육감으로 느끼는 주변의 풍경들을 사진으로 찍어서 증거로 남겨둔다. 그리고 이 증거품인 사진을 솔직하게 말해 줄만한 정직한 사람을 찾던 중 식당의 주방에서 일하는 앤디(Andy: 러셀 크로우 분)라는 착한 청년을 만나게 된다. 마틴은 자신이 찍은 사진과 자기에게 충실한 개 그리고 자기가 찍은 사진을 정직하게 설명해주는 앤디만을 믿고 의지하며 산다. 마틴을 사랑하기 때문에 마틴의 집에서 3년 반 동안 가정부로 일해 온 실리아(Celia: 제네비에브 피콧 분)는 자신보다 앤디를 더 믿는 것에 심한 질투를 느껴서 앤디를 모함하기 위한 계략으로 앤디를 유혹하는데...
