이탈리아 백작이 도난당한 그림 9점을 찾기 위해 탐사보도 기자 출신 플레치를 고용한다. 그 후 백작을 납치한 무장괴한이 몸값으로 도난당한 고가의 피카소 그림을 요구한다. 플레치는 미국 미술상 호랜을 만나기 위해 백작의 딸 안젤라가 임차한 보스턴의 고급 주택에 도착한다. 플레치는 주택 안에서 살해된 미녀 바리스타 로럴 굿윈을 발견하고 경찰에 신고한다. 출동한 먼로 경사와 그리즈 형사는 유력한 살인 용의자로 보이는 플레치를 미행한다. 매수인으로 가장한 플레치는 호랜이 도난당한 피카소 그림을 가지고 있음을 알게 된다. 플레치는 집 소유주 오언과 오언을 짝사랑하는 이웃 이브, 오언과 별거 중인 큐레이터 아내 타티아나 등에 대해 조사하기 시작한다. 그리고 호랜을 미행한 플레치는 백작의 미술품이 호랜의 요트에 숨겨져 있음을 알게 되는데...
