Ding Jianguo

A father who cannot cure his own stubborn illness, a professor mother who struggles with existential questions, a son who is confused and precocious, a giant tortoise that suddenly leaves, and a sentimental grandfather who passed away. The uncle cannot finish reading THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA. The aunt won't get married. The grandfather is his own daughter's enemy. The uncle does not want to return from the Philippines. And an unborn child. Summer goes, and autumn comes. Things remain, but people change.

뤄홍우(황각)는 아버지의 부고를 듣고 장례식에 참석하기 위해 고향 카이리를 찾는다. 돌아온 고향에서 그는 아버지의 고장난 시계에서 얼굴이 잘려나간 어머니의 사진과 함께 과거에 만났던 한 여인의 흔적을 발견한다. 그녀의 이름은 완치원(탕웨이). 뤄홍우는 현실인지 과거인지 꿈속인지 알 수 없는 시공간을 오가며 어머니와 관련된 과거, 그리고 알 수 없는 그녀와 함께한 여름에 대한 회상을 건져 올린다. 그녀를 통해 어머니를 만나고 이해하게 된 그는 그녀를 찾아 언제 끝날지 모르는 긴 여정을 시작한다.

Miner Junpo's daughter is seriously ill and needs urgent treatment. Junpo goes to the mine owner's house to demand money that is owed to him. To no avail. Unable to raise money anywhere for his child's treatment, in desperation Junpo kidnaps his boss's daughter. At the same time, several other unrelated people are involved, either by coincidence or on purpose, in the whole affair. The situation spins out of control. Some will lose their lives, some will be sent to jail, some will have to flee all their lives. A multifaceted story about crime, forgiveness and love in the scenery of the cold Chinese mountains.

비간의 영화 세계에서 과거, 현재, 미래의 시간 구분은 무용하다. 시간성을 전제하는 각기 다른 공간들 역시 얼마든지 연결되고 병치되며 공존할 수 있다는 뜻이다. 비동시적인 것의 동시적 존재, 혹은 그러한 상태가 비간의 장편 에 정확히 기입되어 있다. 감옥에서 출소한 첸은 조카 웨이웨이를 찾아 카일리를 떠나 전위안으로 향한다. 그 길목에서 그가 당도한 곳은 가상의 천변 마을 당마이. 그곳에서 첸은 과거와 미래 혹은 상상과 꿈의 세계에서 온 듯한 인물들과 조우한다. 이때 카메라는 압도적이고 장대한 롱테이크로 당마이의 시공간을 신나게 오고 가고, 그 사이 인물들과 사건은 마주쳤다 분기하다 다시 만나길 거듭한다. 연속적인 내러티브에의 욕망을 거둬낸 비간의 세계에서 인물들은 죽음의 세계조차 뛰어넘어 다르게 살고 또 계속 살아 있다.
