신원 불명의 시체 이른바 “존 도우”가 병원 영안실로 들어온 후 갑자기 되살아나고 병원은 공포에 휩싸인다. 정신과 전문의 다니엘이 그를 맡게 되고, 그가 기억을 되찾아갈수록 주변에 이유를 알 수 없는 죽음이 늘어난다. 죽음 저편에서 존 도우의 몸을 빌려 세상에 침입한 존재가 이 세상을 죽음으로 채우려 한다.
