국회의원을 인질로 잡고 농성 중인 청년을 설득하려던 형사 야부이케는 ‘세계의 법칙을 회복하라’는 수수께끼 같은 쪽지를 받고 혼란에 빠진다. 잠시 망설이던 사이, 청년은 인질을 쏘고 자신도 자살한다. 이 사건으로 문책을 받은 야부이케는 무기한 휴가를 떠나게 된다. 우연히 도착한 숲에서 그는 주위의 모든 나무를 독으로 물들이는 한 그루의 나무를 발견하는데, ‘카리스마’란 이름의 이 나무를 둘러싸고 숲에서는 여러 입장들이 싸우고 있다. 나무와 숲 모두를 구하고 싶다는 생각을 한 야부이케는 이 숲의 투쟁 속에 들어가게 된다.
