Naoko Ôtani

The body of Shinsuke Maeda, a wealthy older man, is discovered in his garden. While at first glance it appears that he missed his step while exiting into the garden and hit his forehead on a flowerbed rock, it is established that a safe installed in the living room has been emptied. It seems that, the night before, Maeda left the hospital he was staying at of his own will and came home, and was robbed immediately after returning. His daughter Yumie Nagano insists that Chikako Inui, a woman her father had been seeing, must be the perpetrator. She says that Maeda was thinking of getting married to Chikako soon. However, Chikako finds Yumie and her husband suspicious. Troubled by debts incurred by opening their ramen store, they pestered Maeda and he pushed them away. She calmly points out that Maeda gave her a will in which he left all of the 50 million plus yen hidden in the safe to her, so she had no reason to steal from him.

Yasutake Shingo works as a newspaper reporter but his life is stiffled and lifeless. That changes one day when he meets the irrepressible Matsunaga Chie by accident. Just as their relationship is blossoming however, Chie tells Shingo that she has breast cancer. Shingo determines to marry Chie right away, but she'll have to go through surgery and cancer treatments firs...

엄청난 재앙을 겪고 모든 것이 사라진 뒤, 남는 것이 ‘희망’ 뿐이라면, 과연 무엇이 ‘희망’일 수 있는가? 소노 시온의 는 아무런 희망이 없는 곳에서 ‘희망’을 찾는 이야기를 그리고 있다. 나가시마현의 오하라 마을. 목축업을 하는 요이치는 아내 이즈미,그리고 부모님과 함께 살고 있다. 어느 날, 대지진이 발생하고 인근의 원자력발전소가 파괴되면서 방사능이 누출된다. 정부는 경계선을 그어 방사능의 영향권에 있는 지역 주민들에게 대피령을 내린다. 요이치의 집은 경계선의 중간에 위치해 있다. 하지만 요이치의 아버지는 치매에 걸린 어머니와 그곳에 남기로 한다. 그리고 그들은 완전히 고립된 삶을 산다. 그런데 안전지역으로 이주한 요이치 부부는 불안한 삶을 이어가는 반면 아버지와 어머니는 평온하기 그지없다. 하지만 사람들이 완전히 사라진 오하라 마을의 그로테스크한 모습은 마치 종말 이후의 지구의 모습을 보는 듯 하다. 그래서, 그들이 찾는 것은 사실 ‘희망’이 아니라 ‘위안’이다. 즉, ‘같이 있다는 것’ 그리고 ‘같이 죽는다는 것’이 그것이다. 영화제목 는 너무나 역설적이다. Shuichi Furukawa receives a phone call from his mother. She reminds him that they are moving the next day. The following day, Shuichi takes a train ride back to his hometown. He arrives at his parents home, but nobody is home. He looks for the house key under a potted plant but can't find the key. He starts to thinks back to his childhood days in his parents home. Shuichi grew up with his younger brother, older sister, father who ran a shoe making business out of their garage and mother. Shuichi grew up with a crush on an older woman who lived next door and he loved to make piggy banks out of empty whiskey bottles. One day on a school picnic, Shuichi's classmates grabbed a lunchbox from a fellow student and eventually gave the lunch box to Shuichi. All the other students chanted "throw it away," while Shuichi's former friend looked on in despair.

아파트 1303호에 이사 온 모든 여자들이 베란다에서 떨어져 자살하는 기이한 사건이 일어난다. 그곳에서 동생을 잃은 미도리가와는 동생의 방에서 생소한 물건들이 발견되자 동생의 죽음에 의문을 갖게 되고 한 형사에게 그 아파트에 얽힌 사연을 듣게 된다. 1303호에서 한 소녀가 학대를 견디다 못해 엄마를 찔러 죽이고 자신도 몸을 던져 자살한 것. 미도리가와는 1303호의 악령이 숨조여 오는 것도 모른 채 그 사건에 얽힌 책까지 읽으며 동생의 사인을 밝히려 드는데...

아케치 부부는 조용하고 평화롭게 여생을 보내고 있다. 부부의 조신한 딸, 토모코는 동료교사와 결혼을 앞두고 있다. 십년 전 의절을 선언한 뒤 오랫동안 연락을 끊고 살던 장남 슈지가 집에 오면서 이들의 조용한 삶은 흔들리게 된다. 방탕한 아들의 갑작스러운 출현은 안정된 가정의 이면에 숨겨져 있던 어두운 비밀을 들추어낸다.

큰 재산 없이 노년에 접어든 야마모토는 이런저런 사고를 치면서 큰딸 노리코의 보살핌을 받으며 살고 있다. 하지만 야마모토는 딸의 앞길을 막고 싶지 않다는 생각에 실버타운에 스스로 들어가려 한다. 그런 아버지의 모습을 보는 노리코의 마음은 갈수록 불편해진다.

A widow and her two sons, Seitaro and Koji, live in the small town of Komori, where Buraku people are forced to reside. The two boys are continuously harassed by their teachers and classmates through their childhood as a result of their Buraku heritage. In the midst of the 1918 Great Rice Riots in Osaka, Seitaro meets with Asako, the daughter of a rice shop owner, and falls in love with her. She too is of Buraku descent. At the same period, Hideaki, an old friend of the brothers returns to Komori, and he along with Koji and the townspeople create "Zenkoku Suiheisha", the National Levelers Association, an organization pledged to build a bridge over the river of discrimination, making all people equal in every way.
