A country road, front-wheel drive. A man, Victor, is waiting. A convertible pulls up. Linda and another man come out. All three take up arms and get into traction to rob Victor's brother-in-law. In their absence, a wanderer from the woods approaches the car. He hides under the back seat cover, when the gangsters come back. Coldly, Linda kills her accomplices to keep the loot. Back in Paris, stripper by profession, she performs her last stripping and returns home. The wanderer was waiting for him. He demands a million from her for her silence.

1940년 6월 남프랑스의 농촌 마을에 파리에서 피난오다 공습으로 부모를 잃고 죽은 강아지를 안고 헤매던 소녀 폴레트는 근처 어느 농가에 들어선다. 그곳은 전쟁과는 아무 상관이 없다는 듯 평화롭고 한적한 곳이었다. 그 농가의 아들 미셀은 고아가 된 폴레트를 불쌍하게 생각하고 자기 집으로 데려와 미셀과 함께 강아지를 묻어준 뒤 무덤에 십자가를 세워준다. 살아있는 것이 죽었을 때는 이렇게 묻어주는 것이라고 알게 된 뽈레트는 새든, 벌레든 죽은 동물을 모아 무덤을 만들고 십자가를 세워준다. 무덤은 점점 늘어가고 십자가가 더욱 많이 필요해지자 미셀은 교회 제단에 놓여진 십자가를 훔치려 하고, 거기에 그치지 않고 형의 묘지에서 뽑아온다. 그러던 어느날, 고아수용소로 데려가기 위해 적십자의 조사반이 파견나온다. 이때 아버지는 미셀과 십자가가 있는 장소를 알려주면 폴레트를 그들에게 넘기지 않겠다는 약속을 하지만, 결국 이를 어기고 폴레트는 조사반에 넘긴다. 미셀은 폴레트를 위해 아름답게 만들었던 방앗간의 묘지를 모두 망거뜨리며 울분을 터뜨린다. 한편, 전쟁 고아라는 딱지를 붙이고 혼잡한 정류장 대합실 구석에 서 있던 뽈레트는 어디선가 미셀이라고 부르는 소리를 듣고 계속 미셀과 엄마를 외치며 군중들 속으로 사라진다.

A couple of dancers performs in a night club. The man is jealous of Gina, his partner,and keeps making scenes to her, going as far as bullying her on the stage during their act. A man gets killed. The dancer is suspected for being jealous of all the other men. Another potential culprit could the father of Gina since he overprotected his daughter. The real culprit will be unmasked after the police detective finds the murder has something to with the Occupation period.

Although it can boast great performances by the alluring Les Bluebell Girls and by Jacques Hélian's lively Big Band the venue does not attract people anymore. Nightclub patrons now prefer the jazz cellars of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Taking this new taste into account, the staff of the "Tambourin" and Jacques Hélian decide to set up their own club, "La Pivoine Ecarlate". They are joined by Pâquerette, a flower vendor and amateur singer, and by Jean-Pierre Francis, an existentialist poet...
