The plot then splits into a series of parallels, flash forwards and flashbacks. One depicts Ralph’s imprisonment after being framed for drug trafficking. The other follows the dramatic ascent of his career to hype status and the pairing between the dynamic Patsy and himself.

Sam Cahill: 대니 글로버 분)은 닥 니에 소재한 몬타그나드 마을 주민에게 그들의 제례 의식을 위해 필요한 코끼리를 되찾아 주겠다는 섣부른 약속을 해버림에 따라 일대 혼란과 불행한 사건들이 속속 터지게 된다. 샘은 미군의 베트남전 군사 작전을 도와주었던 마을 사람들에게 어떻게든 보답해야 한다는 일종의 사명감을 갖고 있다. 그러나 샘의 지휘권을 대신하라는 차임자 임무를 띄고 작전지에 투임된, 웨스트 포인트 출신의 장교이자 교과서 같은 스타일의 캡틴 T.C. 도일(Capt. T.C. Doyle: 레이 리요타 분)에겐 코끼리 수송 임무가 골치 덩어리로만 여겨질 뿐이다. 마침내 하비 H.A. 애쉬포드(Harvey (H.A.) Ashford: 더그 E. 도그 분), 로렌스 팔리(Lawrence Farley: 코린 네멕 분), 데이빗 폴(David Poole: 데니스 레리 분) 같은, 전혀 팀윅이 맞지 않을듯한 용사들이 군인 정신에 입각하여 코끼리를 찾아낸 뒤 비밀리에 수송하는 작전에 착수한다. 그러나 이들이 수행해야 하는 작전은 그들이 지금까지 받아온 어떠한 공수 특전 훈련에도 없는 코믹하고 해괴망측한 어드벤처 작전이었다. 실종된 보탓이란 이름의 코끼리를 찾아내서 남의 눈에 띄지 않게 육로와 해로를 이용하여 수송하는 것이 그중 한가지 어드벤처인데 지옥같은 수송작전 도중 어느 누구도 이 장난꾸러기 코끼리와 사랑에 빠지게 되리라곤 상상하지 못한다. 이러저러한 모든 작전이 실패로 끝나버리고 주민들과 약속한 최종일까지 수송을 성공시키기 위해선 이제 오직 한가지 옵션이 남아있을 뿐이다. 그것은 바로 보탓 코끼리가 낙하산을 타고 마을의 한가운데에 낙하하는 것인데...

아서 호젯은 품평회에서 고아 돼지 베이브를 상품으로 받아온다. 호젯 농장이 양치기 개 플라이는 기존 질서에 위배된다는 대장 렉스의 만류에도 불구하고 베이브를 데려다 자신의 새끼처럼 키운다. 베이브는 연로한 양 마와 괴짜 오리 페르디난디를 사귀는데, 호젯은 베이브를 무척 아끼지만 그의 아내는 베이브를 크리스마스 요리로 만들 작정이다. 어느날 양도둑을 발견한 베이브는 경보를 울리고, 베이브의 용맹에 감명받은 호젯은 그에게 양몰이를 맡긴다. 이에 양치기 개의 권위를 침범당한 렉스는 속이 뒤틀린다. 처음 베이브는 개들처럼 위협과 폭언으로 양들을 다스리려 하지만 곧 공손하고 예의바른 태도로 양들의 협조를 이끌어 내는데....
