아돌프는 뭇 여성의 관심을 한몸에 받을 만큼 매력 넘치지만 정작 자신이 관심 있는 이의 사랑은 받지 못한다. 그가 좋아하는 건 풋내기 오페라 가수 야니치카. 하지만 그녀는 유명인에게만 관심이 있다. 어느 날 그리스인 파르티잔 아포스톨레크를 알게 된 아돌프에게 좋은 생각이 떠오른다. 그를 멋있게 꾸며 야니치카에게 그리스에서 온 작곡가라고 속여 소개할 계획이다. 자신을 무시하는 야니치카에게 복수하기 위해 시작된 이 속임수는 그러나 아돌프의 계획과는 완전히 다른 방향으로 나아가기 시작한다.

Mounting a defense of timid, inhibited, clumsy, and unsuccessful individuals, the three protagonists are a complete antithesis of the industrious heroes of socialist aesthetics. Martyrs of Love cemented Nemec’s reputation as the kind of unrestrained nonconformist the Communist establishment considered the most dangerous to their ideology.
