꽁스땅스는 책 읽기를 좋아하는 여자이다. 어느날 연인에게 책을 읽어주는 것으로 시작된다. 제명은 '책 읽어 주는 여자'. 그녀가 차츰 소설의 세계로 빠져 들면서 어느덧 책의 주인공 마리가 되는데. 마리가 신문을 낸 '젊은 여성이 댁에서 책을 읽어드립니다.'라는 광고를 보고 다섯명의 신청자가 의뢰를 한. 첫번째 의뢰인은 반신불수의 미소년 에릭으로 '머리카락'을 읽어준다. 두번째는 이기심 많은 장군의 미망인에게 '전쟁과 평화'를, 세번째는 일중독에 걸려있는 사장에게 마그리뜨 뒤라스의 '연인'을 읽어준다. 집지키는 6살 소녀에게는 '이상한 나라의 앨리스'를 읽어주고, 속물스러운 노파의 서재에서는 '소돔의 120일'을 읽는 동안 상대의 에로틱한 요구에 시달리기도 하는데...
