Aesop is a trouble-making young boy who finds himself in another world filled with creatures he never believed to exist, such as fairies and talking donkeys. He sets off to find a way back to the normal world. On his journey he befriends many classical creatures from well-known fables and encounters many trials, each teaching him a valuable lesson.

하록이 어떻게 아르카디아 호를 타고 우주해적으로서의 삶을 살게 되었는지 설명하는 일종의 프리퀄 스토리의 극장판. 감독은 카츠마타 토모하루. 작화감독은 코마츠바라 카즈오. 은하철도 999 극장판이 히트하자 하록 시리즈를 리부트하기 위해 제작된 작품으로 아르카디아 호의 디자인을 은하철도 999 버전으로 맞추고, 스토리도 젊은 하록을 내보내 처음부터 시작했다. 이 때문에 1978년작 우주해적 캡틴 하록과 스토리가 이어지지 않는다. 원래는 이어주려고 했으나 후속작 무한궤도 SSX가 애매하게 완결되면서 결국 완전히 별개가 되었다. 우주로 지배권을 확장하려던 지구인들은 역시 우주를 제패하던 외계인, 일루미다스와 전쟁을 벌여 패한다. 지구군 우주함대 소속 함장이던 하록은 패장이 되어 정복당한 지구로 돌아온다. 영화가 끝나기 전까지는 내내 무력감과 절망이 감도는 어두운 내용으로 이루어져 있으나 하록이 이를 극복하는 내용으로 되어있다.

로버트 루이스 스티븐슨 원작의 을 주인공을 제외하고 동물 캐릭터로 의인화시킨 작품. 토에이 창립 20주년 기념작이자, 실질적인 토에이 극장 아니메 제1기를 마감하는 작품으로 전성기 시절의 A형 대작 스태프들이 최후의 심혈을 기울여 완성했다. 특히 에서의 대활약으로 이케다 히로시 감독에게 신임을 얻은 미야자키 하야오가 더 많은 범위에 걸쳐 자신의 색깔을 담아 놓게 되는데, 비밀을 지닌 여주인공과 미워할 수 없는 악당이 등장하는 미야자키식 인물 설정 구도도 이 작품에서 처음으로 엿보이기 시작한다.
