His real ambition is to be a movie star, and this comes a step closer when he meets an Australian photographer. But in a city where every family has a member who has been “martyred,” the streets are as perilous as they are vivid. Australia’s recent involvement with Afghanistan has been mixed, to say the best. The deeply-felt humanism of this film might just be our most effective contribution to that troubled country.

"위성"은 "헹고"의 여동생인 "아그린"을 보고 첫 눈에 사랑에 빠지나, 그녀는 전쟁 중 받은 상처로 늘 악몽에 시달리며 괴로워한다. 전쟁이 임박한 가운데 "위성"은 지뢰를 내다팔고 무기를 사두는 등, 나름대로 살아가는 방법을 찾아나가면서 "아그린"의 관심을 끌기 위해 갖은 노력을 기울인다. 그러나 아그린은 그런 "위성"과 자기를 아껴주는 오빠 "헹고", 그리고 불쌍한 아들인 "리가"가 곁에 있음에도 불구하고 전쟁 중 군인들에게 겁탈당하고 아이까지 낳은 악몽 때문에 늘 자살을 생각하는데......

이란과 이라크의 오랜 전쟁을 겪으며 황폐해질대로 황폐해진 국경 마을, 바네. 어머니가 막내를 낳다 죽고 밀수길에 나섰던 아버지마저 지뢰를 밟고 목숨을 잃으면서 12살 난 소년 아윱은 졸지에 가족들을 책임져야하는 꼬마 가장이 된다. 아윱은 학교까지 그만두고 돈벌이에 뛰어들지만, 아픈 동생 마디의 약값을 치르고나면 여동생 아마네에게 새 공책을 사주기도 빠듯하기만 하다. 설상가상으로 수술을 서두르지 않으면 마디가 몇 개월 못가 죽게 될 거라는 의사의 진단에 아윱은 수술비를 마련하기 위해 밀수하는 사람들의 심부름꾼이 된다. 국경을 넘나들어야하는 밀수는 이란과 이라크 국경 수비대의 눈을 피해야 하는 것은 물론, 밀수꾼을 습격하여 물건을 강탈하는 무장괴한의 위협을 감수해야하는 위험하기 짝이 없는 일. 게다가 사방에는 전쟁 중 양국에서 뿌려놓은 지뢰들이 깔려있어 언제 밟을지 모르고, 짐을 나르는 말과 노새들에게 술을 먹이지 않으면 안 될 정도로 혹독한 추위와 눈보라도 견뎌내야 한다.

양탄자 가베를 냇물에 씻고 있는 노부부(후세인 모하라미 분/로게이 모하라미 분). 가베에는 말 위에 앉아있는 남녀가 수놓아져 있고 그림을 향해 말을 걸자 물속에 잠진 가베 위로 젊은 여자가 나타나 가베에 얽힌 자신의 가족과 사랑 이야기를 들려준다. 철에 따라 거처를 옮겨 다니는 유목민의 딸인 가베(상하예 드조다트 분)는 양탄자를 뜻하는 '가베'와 이름이 같다. 그녀는 자신의 뒤를 그림자처럼 쫓으며 늑대 울음 소리로 구애하는 기사와 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 가베의 아버지는 그녀의 삼촌이 결혼할 때까지 결혼을 허락할 수 없다고 하자 가베의 양탄자는 점점 어두운 빛으로. 한편, 시인이자 교사인 가베의 삼촌 사야히(아바스 사야 분)는 식구들과 살기 위해 도시 생활을 마감하고 고향으로 돌아와 아이들에게 양탄자 가베를 이루는 빛깔의 의미를 가르쳐주며 살아간다. 그러던 어느 날 그는 시냇가에서 카나리아처럼 노래부르는 반려자를 만나 결혼하나 가베의 아버지는 그녀에게 그녀의 어머니가 아이를 낳을 때까지 기다리라며 또한번 결혼을 허락하지 않는다. 결국 가베는 삼촌의 묵인 아래 말을 타고 온 그 기사를 따라 가족으로부터 도망치게 되고 가베의 아버지는 총을 들고 쫓아가서 그들을 쏜다. 노부부가 양탄자 가베를 씻는 장면이 다시 보이고 할머니가 된 가베는 그때 아버지는 도망치는 자신들을 죽이지 않았다고 말한다. 그저 소문일 뿐, 여동생들이 자기처럼 더 이상 늑대의 부름에 대답하지 못하도록 엄포를 놓은 것이라고 하는데...
