Joey Wellman, an American cartoonist from Cleveland now largely forgotten at home, visits France with his partner Lena to attend an exhibition in Paris about the comic strip (bande dessinée) which features his work. He also hopes to be reconciled with his daughter Elsie who has been a student in Paris for two years, in flight from the American culture of which she sees her father as a typical example. Elsie is naively infatuated with French literature, and is trying to secure an introduction to the brilliant university professor Christian Gauthier, an expert on Flaubert but also an enthusiast for comic books. The meeting of father and daughter goes badly, but Elsie is persuaded to join Joey and Lena for the weekend at the country house of Gauthier's mother, Isabelle. During a comic-themed masquerade party, all of the characters are made to reconsider their present and past relationships.
Charles Duchemin, a well-known gourmet and publisher of a famous restaurant guide, is waging a war against fast food entrepreneur Tri- catel to save the French art of cooking. After having agreed to appear on a talk show to show his skills in naming food and wine by taste, he is confronted with two disasters: his son wants to become a clown rather than a restaurant tester and he, the famous Charles Duchemin, has lost his taste!
2차 세계대전 중인 1944년 프랑스. 시골 청년 ‘라콤 루시앙’(피에르 블레이즈)은 아버지가 감옥에 들어간 사이 어머니가 다른 남자와 살게 되어 고향집에 머물 수 없게 되었다. 그리고 지하운동을 주도하는 학교 선생님에게 지하단원이 되고 싶다고 하지만 그것도 거절당한다. 루시앙은 우연히 한 호텔에서 독일의 경찰 일을 해주는 프랑스인들과 친해지는데 무심코 고향 학교 선생님을 밀고하게 되어 독일 경찰이 되어 버리고 점차로 권력의 맛에 길들여지게 된다. 어느 날 경찰 동료가 ‘알베르 오른’이란 유태인 재단사가 숨어사는 곳에 루시앙을 데려가 양복을 맞춰주는데 루시앙은 오른의 딸 ‘프랑스’를 사랑하게 된다. 오른은 프랑스와의 문제로 루시앙을 만나러 호텔에 갔다가 유태인을 혐오하는 독일 경찰에게 잡혀 어디론가 보내진다. 한편 연합군의 반격으로 독일군은 수세에 몰리고 레지스탕스의 공격으로 루시앙의 동료 경찰들은 몰살당한다. 독일군인과 함께 유태인 검거에 나선 루시앙은 독일군인을 살해하고 프랑스와 프랑스의 할머니를 데리고 어디론가 도망치려고 한다.
주인공 제라드는 체코슬라바키아의 외무부 차관이다. 요즈음 그는 누군가 자신을 감시하고 미행하고 있다고 느낀다. 그리고 어느 날, 그는 체포되어 독방에 감금당한다. 인민의 최고의 종복이었던 제라드는 수사과정에서 정신적인 고문을 당하면서 자신이 국가 반역에 대한 자백을 강요당한다. 체코슬로바키아의 공산주의자였던 아더 런던의 실화를 바탕으로 하고 있는 반공산주의 영화이지만, 동시에 전체주의에 반기를 들고 있는 작품이다.
스페인 프랑코 정권을 전복시키기 위해 비밀공작을 벌이는 디에고는 노쇠한 좌파 혁명가다. 피곤에 지친 디에고는 조직의 일원인 마리안과 편안한 삶을 살고 싶어하지만 과격한 대학생 나딘과 만나면서 갈등을 겪는다. 레네 감독은 이 영화에서 직업 혁명가가 일상적인 삶과 직면했을 때 어떤 선택의 문제가 발생하는가를 보여준다.
