Rising from the nihilistic ashes of the punk movement in the late 1970s, a fresh crowd of flamboyant fashionistas, who would later be christened the New Romantics, began to materialise on the streets of London. An elaborately styled, gender non-conforming response to the anarchist anti-fashion that preceded it, the New Romantics came dressed to the nines, be it for a night out on the town or just to pop down to the local shops. While so often remembered as a fleeting pop-cultural phenomenon, this invigorating documentary firmly positions the New Romantics as a multidisciplinary art movement, encompassing fashion, performance, music and film. Alongside this cultural re-contextualisation, director Kevin Hegge shines a long-overdue spotlight on some of the movement’s lesser-known pioneers (step aside Spandau Ballet), while proudly centring the LGBTQIA+ stories that are so often erased from history.

지워진 과거, 엇갈린 현재! 1991년 걸프전에서 머리에 총상을 입고 충격성 기억상실증에 걸린 잭 스탁스(에드리언 브로디). 1년 뒤, 8살 소녀 ‘재키’가족의 고장 난 자동차를 고쳐준 뒤 히치하이킹 한 차를 타고 캐나다로 가던 잭 스탁스는 기억을 잃고 쓰러지고, 며칠 뒤 깨어난 그는 살인혐의를 받아 법정에 세워진 사실을 알게 된다. 재판 결과 알파인 그로브 정신병원에 보내지게 된 잭 스탁스. 치료를 위해 약물 주사를 맞고 재킷이 입혀진 채, 시체 보관함에 갇히게 된 그는 극심한 공포감으로 또 다시 기억을 잃게 된다. 예정된 미래… 단서를 찾아 모든 것을 뒤집어야 한다! 잭 스탁스가 다시 깨어난 곳은 어느 허름한 식당 앞. 그곳에서 그는 웨이트리스 재키(키이나 나이틀리)를 만나게 되고, 재키는 오갈 때 없는 잭 스탁스를 자신의 집에 데려 온다. 그녀의 집에서 예전 자신의 물건을 발견한 잭 스탁스. 하지만, 그녀는 “그는 15년 전에 죽었다”라고 말하며 오히려 그를 거칠게 몰아낸다. 그 순간, 다시 병원에서 눈을 뜬 잭 스탁스! 그제서야 그는 미래로 이동해 체포하기 전 우연히 마주쳤던 꼬마 ’재키’를 다시 만났다는 사실을 깨닫게 된다. 그녀가 말한 죽음의 날짜까지는 앞으로 단 4일! 그는 일부러 사건을 일으켜 시체 보관함에 갇히기를 되풀이하며 미래에서 죽음의 단서를 찾기 시작한다. 그는 단서를 찾을 수 있을 것인가? 그리고 4일 뒤 예정된 미래를 뒤 바꿀 수 있을 것인가?

Remembrance of Things Fast represents the culmination of Maybury's work in video, which has developed alongside the technology itself. Starring Tilda Swinton and Rupert Everett in lead roles, the tape confronts the conventions of world television and satellite broadcast, drawing on the fragmentary nature of the medium and the clich_s of the three minute attention span. At the same time, it replaces bland mainstream images with darker, more satirical observations and studies. The environment is surreal, a virtual reality television land of landscapes and imaginary cities, enhanced by Marvin Black's dark, dense soundtrack. Three song clips by The Smiths ('The Queen is Dead', 'There is a Light that Never Goes Out' and 'Panic'), all directed with an artistic and conceptual vision by the late Derek Jarman. The result is the junction of the powerful lyrics and melodies by Morrissey and Marr combined with Jarman's expressive images.

A 16mm anthology of experimental super 8 films by Derek Jarman, Michael Kostiff, Cerith Wyn Evans and John Maybury, with framing footage by Tim Burke of Brion Gysin using a dream machine. Jarman's contribution is a version of his 1977 Art and the Pose (aka Arty the Pose), refilmed at 3fps, with a musical soundtrack. Jarman planned The Dream Machine as a commemoration of William Burroughs and Gysin's 1982 visit to the UK, and received initial funding from the Arts Council in 1983, then rethought the project as a portmanteau film featuring Gysin alone. The production remained in limbo until 1986, when James Mackay obtained completion funding from the British Film Institute. (Since this film was released on VHS accompanied by Jarman's Broken English: Three Songs by Marianne Faithfull, T.G.: Psychic Rally in Heaven and Pirate Tape under the umbrella title The Dream Machine, synopses of this film have often muddled up its details with those of the earlier films. )

The Union Jacking Up is an ode to friends, including Trojan and Leigh Bowery who feature in the film among others, as well as a collage of news footage of 80s Britain. The film’s haunting soundtrack is composed similarly to the video and 16mm footage that fades and dissolves on screen, often montaging two sources to create abstract combinations and juxtapositions. - ICA
