쿠바 오리엔테 지방에서 태어난 레이날도 아레나스는 가난하지만 풍요로운 자연 속에서 자유를 만끽하며 성장해나간다. 십대시절, 카스트로 혁명군에 참가 할 만큼 성숙했던 아레나스는 스무 살 때 하바나 대학에 입학하여 자신의 문학적 재능을 키워나간다. 정치 혁명 초기, 국제 도시였던 하바나는 정치, 사회, 문화 그리고 성혁명까지 온갖 가능성을 내포한 물결이 넘쳐난다. 레이날도는 그곳에서 작가와 동성애자로서의 정체성을 찾기 위한 탐구의 나날을 보낸다. 그러나 혁명이 끝난 뒤, 레이날도의 삶은 고통으로 뒤바뀌게 된다. 1960년대 쿠바 정권의 예술가와 동성애자들에 대한 탄압정책 속에서도 글쓰기를 계속하던 레이날도는 성희롱 누명으로 기소되었다가 구치소를 빠져나오지만 결국 경찰에게 잡혀 '엘 모로' 감옥으로 보내진다. 레이날도는 2년간 편지대필을 하며 감옥 생활을 버텨나간다. 그는 틈틈이 옥중에서 쓴 소설을 밖으로 빼내는데 성공하지만 이후 그 사실이 밝혀져 심한 벌을 받는다. 결국 그는 작품과 목숨의 선택기로에서 작품을 포기하고 감옥에서 풀려난다. 1980년, 쿠바 정권은 동성애자, 정신병자, 범죄자들을 쿠바에서 추방하는 정책을 발표한다. 레이날도는 동성애자로서 쿠바를 탈출, 뉴욕에 정착하지만 가난과 에이즈라는 고통이 그에게 찾아온다. 그리고 그는 친구 라자로의 곁에서 마지막 선택을 한다.
