1870년 서부의 작은 마을 헤이드리빌의 어느 일요일 아침, 세 명의 무법자들이 마을 역에서 서성거리며 시계를 본다. 이들의 보스 프랭크 밀러가 탄 기차가 12시 정오에 도착하는 것을 기다리고 있다. 이날은 바로 헤이들리빌 마을의 보안관 윌 케인이 보안관직을 은퇴하여 아름다운 신부 에이미와 결혼식을 올리고 마을을 떠나려하는 날인데, 5년 전 그에게 체포되어 투옥된 밀러가 복수를 하러오고 있는 중인 것이다. 이미 보안관직을 사임한 윌에게 더 이상의 책임은 없지만, 그는 밀러가 마을에 큰 피해를 줄 것을 알기에 고뇌에 빠지는데...

한 여인이 유모차에 있던 아기를 안아 들고 길을 걸어간다. 잠시 후 아기의 엄마가 비명을 지르며 뛰어와 아기를 데려간다. 현장에서 체포된 샐리는 자신이 착각했다고 얘기하지만 구치소에 들어가고, 험악한 분위기 속에서 샐리는 자신이 왜 여기까지 오게 되었는지 생각한다. 부모님과 살던 순진한 샐리는 순회 연주를 다니는 피아니스트 스티브의 유혹에 넘어가고, 생각지도 않은 임신까지 하게 된다. 원래 감독은 엘머 클리프턴이었으나 촬영 중 그가 심장 마비로 사망한 뒤 각본에 참여했던 루피노가 대신 촬영을 마치게 되었다. 실질적인 루피노의 데뷔작이지만, 루피노는 클리프턴을 존중해 그의 이름을 감독 크레디트에 올렸다.
