After a long journey, a traveller and his wife arrive at the Usher mansion. Upon arriving, however, they discover that the mansion's sibling inhabitants, Roderick and Madeline Usher, have been afflicted with a mysterious malady: Roderick's senses have become painfully acute, while Madeline has become nearly catatonic. That evening, Roderick tells his guests of an old Usher family curse: any time there has been more than one Usher child, all of the siblings have gone insane and died horrible deaths. As the days wear on, the effects of the curse reach their terrifying climax.

Jerry Lewis plays Norman Phiffer, a proud man in a humble life, who doesn't know that his girlfriend, Barbara, is heir to the Tuttle Department Store dynasty. Bertie jealously retaliates by flirting with Gar Aldrich, an actor who will be in her husband's play. Bill goes to Connecticut for a heart-to-heart talk, finds Gar there and punches him.

After his death sentence is commuted to life in prison, John Resko is transferred from Sing-Sing to Dannemora where, with the help of a humane prison guard, he becomes a rehabilitated man and a successful painter.

사운드 오브 뮤직 등으로 유명한 뮤지컬의 거장 리차드 로저스(Richard Rodgers)와 오스카 해머슈타인 2세(Oscar Hammerstein II)의 브로드웨이 뮤지컬을 영화화한 작품. 2차 대전의 여파는 멀리 남태평양의 외딴 섬에까지 암운을 드리운다. 그러나 이곳의 원주민과 주둔군인 미해군들은 남국의 정치 속에서 밝게 살아간다. 한편, 미 해군 간호사인 넬리(밋지 게이너 분)는 프랑스인으로 농장을 경영하는 40대 홀아비 에밀(로자노 브라지 분)과 알게 되고, 부드럽고 온화한 성격의 그와 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 넬리는 에밀이 폴리네시아인 아내와 사별했음을 알고 갈등에 휩싸인다. 자기 아닌 다른 여인과의 옛사랑에 대한 시기심에 괴로워하던 그녀는 부대장에게 전역을 요청한다. 그런 그녀의 갈등은 더욱 깊어만 가는데...
