2차 대전이 막바지에 다다른 1944년의 미국 남부루이지애 나주의 한 병영. 미국, 특히 남부에서는 흑인들이 여전히 천시되던 시절인데, 주로 흑인들로 이루어진 이 부대의 야구팀소대 선임하사 워터스 상사(Master Sergeant Vernon Waters: 아돌프 캐사르 분)가 어느날 술에 취해 부대 부근을 배회하다가 총에 맞아 살해되는 사건이 발생한다. 사건조사를 위해 워싱턴에서 특파된 헌병 장교 다벤포트 대위(Captain Davenport: 하워드 E. 롤링스 주니어 분)는 그 당시로서는 보기 힘든 흑인장교로 뭇사람들의 시선을 한몸에 받는다. 연대장 니븐스 대령(Colonel Nivens: 트레이 윌슨 분)의 비협조적인 자세에도 불구하고 끈질긴 조사를 펼치는 과정에서, 다벤포트는 피살자 워터스의 직속 중대장이었던 백인 장교 테일러 대위(Captain Taylor: 데니스 립스콥 분)의 협조를 얻게 되는데, 테일러의 말을 통해 이 사건이 당시 한창 날뛰던 KKK단의 소행이 아니라 부대 군인의 짓이라는 심증을 얻게 된 그는, 니븐스 연대장을 설득하여 사건 당일밤 길에서 워터스를 구타했던 백인장교 두 명을 심문해도 좋다는 허락을 받는다. 그러나 심문 끝에 이 두 백인장교가 살해범이 아니라는 확신을 갖게 된 다벤포트는 조사의 방향을 바꿔 워터스의 소대원이었던 흑인병사들에게로 눈을 돌린다. 근무 중 술을 마셨다가 워터스에 의해 이등병으로 강등된 윌키(Private Wilkie: 아트 에반스 분), 남부출신 흑인들을 공연히 경멸하는 워터스와 주먹싸움까지 벌였던 피터슨(Private First Class Melvin Peterson: 덴젤 워싱톤 분), 그리고 친한 친구 C.J(C.J. Memphis: 래리 릴리 분)가 워터스의 모함에 빠져 영창에서 자살하자 워터스를 증오하게 된 헨슨(Private Henson: 윌리암 알렌 영 분) 등 여러 병사들이 나름대로의 살해동기를 가지고 있음을 알게 되는데....

1928년 뉴욕. 마조리 키난 롤링스(메리 스틴버겐)는 출판사로부터 자신의 소설 출판을 거절당한다. 그 일이 있은 후 롤링스는 남편에게 플로리다 주에 위치한 크로스 크리크라는 곳에 있는 작은 오렌지 농장을 구입했으니 함께 들어가서 살자고 하지만 이마저 거절당한다. 결국 혼자서 자동차를 몰고 그곳까지 가다가 농장 인근에서 차가 고장 난다. 인근에 사는 노턴 바스킨(피터 코요테)는 그녀에게 호감을 느끼고 자신의 차로 그녀를 오렌지 농장에 있는 황량한 오두막집까지 태워다 준다. 다 쓰러져가는 오두막과 온통 먼지투성이인 집안 살림에 롤링스는 당황하지만 흑인 여인 ‘기치’가 오두막을 불쑥 찾아와 적은 급료라도 좋으니 가정부로 일하게 해달라고 하면서 점차 크리스 크로스에서의 생활에 익숙해져 간다. 그리고 인근에 산다는 마쉬 터너(립 톤)가 딸 엘리(다나 힐), 그리고 엘리가 키우는 새끼 사슴 ‘플랙’과 함께 롤링스를 찾아오면서 이웃들과의 교류도 시작된다. 하지만 농장 운영은 생각보다 어려웠고 이웃들과의 교류도 생각처럼 쉽지만은 않다. 롤링스는 새로운 소설을 쓰면서 인근 주민들을 고용해서 농장에 물을 댈 관개 수로를 새로 정비하며 농장에는 활력이 찾아온다. 어느 날 롤링스가 엘리의 14번째 생일을 맞아 마쉬의 집을 찾아간다. 그런데 엘리가 키우던 플랙이 우리를 탈출해서 한바탕 소동을 일으킨다. 마쉬는 평소에도 플랙을 곱게 보지 않았는데 가족들이 키우는 야채를 뜯어먹고 엘리의 생일 케이크까지 망쳐버리자 결국은 총으로 쏴 죽인다. 엘리와 가족들의 원망어린 눈빛에 밀조한 술에 잔뜩 취한 마쉬는 마을로 내려가서 주정을 부리다 보안관의 추적을 받는데...
