Artist Lyle Maze is reconciled to a life without romance thanks to his dual afflictions: Tourette's Syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder. This musical is based on four short stories by Damon Runyon. In one tale, gambler Feet Samuels sells his body to science just as he realizes that Hortense loves him and that he would rather live than die. In another story, Harriet's parrot is killed, and she has problems dealing with her loss. Then, there is a gambler, "Regret", who has bloodhounds on his trail when he becomes a murder suspect. Finally, "The Brain" is bleeding profusely, and his friends search for a way to save his life through a blood transfusion.

어려서부터 의붓아버지로부터 성폭행을 당해온 클로디아(바브라 스트라이샌드 분)는 사춘기로 접어들면서 정신 불안 증세를 보이며 여러 가지 탈선 행위로 부모에게 반항한다. 그리고 결혼 생활에도 파경을 맞고 고급 매춘을 하며 살아가던 중 강압적인 손님과 몸싸움을 하다 살인을 하고 만다. 그녀의 정신을 감정한 의사들은 그녀를 정신 병원에 수감해야 한다고 주장하지만 클로디아는 정식 재판을 받길 원한다. 그녀의 변호를 맡게 된 레빈스키(리차드 드레이퍼스 분)는 심리를 진행하면서 클로디아의 아픈 과거를 알게 되고 그녀를 깊이 동정하게 된다. 그리고 클로디아는 심리 중 자신의 아픔을 토로하며 재판을 받을 수 있음을 주장하고 자신을 지켜주지 못한 엄마에 대한 원망으로 굳게 닫아 버렸던 마음을 열어 엄마와 화해한다. 클로디아는 재판 받을 수 있는 능력이 있음을 증명하고 재판에서 무죄 방면된다.
