For 16 years Miss Bentley has been spending April at an elegant hillside villa on Lake Como. This year, 1937, her London society artist father has recently died and the only other English-speaking guests are brash Americans. Then Major Wilshaw arrives. He suggests they meet for cocktails and Miss Bentley stands him up -- not even thinking about it -- as she helps the new nanny of an Italian family settle in. Miss Beaumont, a tall, young American who has dropped out of finishing school in Switzerland, is bored and finds some amusement in flirting with the major, whose libido is awakened for the first time since before the great war. And Miss Bentley now finds more about the major to admire than his ears.

옛날 옛적, 아이들을 사랑하여 크리스마스때마다 선물을 가져다주는 마음좋은 클로스 영감 부부(Santa Claus: 데이빗 허들레스톤 분 / Anya Claus: 쥬디 콘웰 분), 크리스마스날 동네 아이들에게 선물을 돌리다 숲속에서 눈보라를 만나 쓰러졌다 깨다보니 요정의 나라에 와있다. 요정들이 만든 장난감을 세상 어린이들에게 가져다줄 사람을 찾던 중 클로스 영감이 선택된 것이다. 그때부터 클로스 영감은 산타클로스란 이름을 갖게 되고 크리스마스 이브마다 아이들에게 선물을 전해준다. 그일이 산타 혼자의 힘으로 벅차게 되자 팻치(Patch: 더들리 무어 분)를 조수로 뽑는다. 조수 자리를 내놓는 팻치는 산타가 자기를 싫어한다고 생각하며 요정 나라를 떠나 인간 세계로 온다. 산타에게 자신의 솜씨를 과시하고 싶었던 팻치는 악덕 장난감업자 비지(B.Z.: 존 리스고우 분)와 일한다. 한편 고아로 거리에서 사는 조는 산타를 만나고 나서 산타를 믿게 되고 비지의 일가친척인 외로운 소녀 코넬리아(Cornelia: 캐리 케이 하임 분)와 친해진다. 몸이 아파 코넬리아 집에 있던 조는 비지에게 잡히고 코넬리아는 사탕이 터진다는 말을 엿듣고 산타에게 알리는데.

영국에 유학해 변호사 자격을 딴 간디(벤 킹슬리)는 1893년 남아프리카에 가 소송사건을 맡는다. 간디는 그 곳에서 유색인종에 대한 차별대우를 받게 된다. 이를 계기로 그는 남아프리카의 인도 거류민을 돕기 위한 다양한 활동을 시작한다. 이후 1915년, 간디는 인도로 돌아와 인도독립을 위한 노력을 하게 된다. 그는 비폭력운동을 주도하면서 수차례 투옥되기도 한다. 인도는 마침내 1947년 8월 영국으로부터 독립을 이룬다. 그러나 힌두교와 이슬람교의 종교적 대립으로 인해 인도와 파키스탄으로 나뉘어 독립을 하게 된다. 이후에도 종교분쟁을 해결하기 위해 노력했던 간디는 1948년 1월 과격파 힌두교도가 쏜 총탄에 암살당한다.

특수요원으로 많은 전쟁과 내전에 투입되었던 샤논(크리스토퍼 월큰 분)은 사랑했던 여인 제시와도 이혼하고 혼자서 외롭게 살아간다. 현재 그는 사건을 의뢰 받고 정보를 알아 오거나 일을 처리해주는 해결사. 그가 새롭게 의뢰 받은 일은 바로 장가로에 가서 새로운 킴바 정권에 대해 알아오는 것이다. 그는 새를 연구하는 자연학자로 위장하고 장가로로 향한다. 무력적이고 강압적인 독재와 끊임없는 쿠데타가 일어나는 그곳에서 샤논은 킴바 대통령의 요새를 촬영하고 조사하는 중 가브리엘이라는 여인의 안내를 받게 된다. 그러나 그 여인은 킴바의 여자였고 그는 이 일로 인해 감옥에 갇혀 심한 고문을 받는다. 그곳에서 대통령 후보였던 오코에 박사를 만난 샤논은 그가 진정한 민중의 대통령이 될 것이라 느낀다. 호텔에서 만났던 기자 노스의 도움으로 감옥을 빠져 나오지만 샤논은 추방당한다. 미국으로 돌아와 자신의 의뢰인에게 그곳의 상황을 전하자 그는 샤논에게 새로운 제안을 하는데 바로 장가로로 다시 가서 독재자 킴바를 제거하는 것. 바로 새로운 대통령을 꿈꾸는 제3의 인물, 새코우 보비의 음모이다. 그는 옛 동지들을 하나 둘씩 모아 팀을 짜고 무기와 서류 등 완벽한 준비를 마친다. 배를 타고 은밀히 그곳으로 향하고 장가라에 잠입한 그는 무장을 하고 킴바의 요새로 가는데...

AD 37년, 로마 황제 티베릴우스(Tiberius : 피터 오툴 분)의 폭정 시절, 황제가 입양아인 칼리큘라(Caligula : 말콤 맥도웰 분)보다 친손자인 제멜리스(Gemellus : 브루노 브라이브 분)를 더 귀여워하자, 칼리큘라는 자신이 왕위에 오르지 못하면 죽음을 당할 것임을 알고, 꼭 살아남아서 황제가 되어야겠다고 결심한다. 황제의 심복이며 칼리큘라를 싫어하는 네르바(Nerva : 존 질거드 분)는 그가 황제가 되면 로마가 망한다며 자살을 한다. 이에 충격을 받은 칼리큘라는 생명의 위협을 느끼기 시작하고, 궁정의 수호대장 메크론(Macro : 구이도 마나니 분)은 아내마저 칼리큘라에게 바칠 정도로 그에게 충성하지만 칼리큘라는 그 또한 믿을 수가 없다. 어느날, 티베리우스는 심장마비를 일으켜 침대 위에 누워만 있는 신세가 되자, 칼리큘라와 메크론은 누워있는 그를 베개로 눌러 죽이고 25세에 로마 황제로 즉위한다. 처음에는 치정에 전념하던 그도 점점 주위 사람들을 의심하고, 측근들을 사소한 트짐으로 하나씩 제거하면서 서서히 광기를 드러낸다. 여동생 드루실라(Drusilla : 테레사 안 사보이 분)를 동생 이상으로 사랑하여 동거하는가 하면 음란한 왕비 케소냐(Caesonia : 헬렌 미렌 분)가 낳은 딸을 아들이라고 우긴다. 칼리큘라는 또한 웅대한 이집트풍의 연극을 기획하고 부인과 함께 직접 출연하기도 한다. 칼리큘라의 폭정은 날이 갈 수록 심해져 드루실라가 열병으로 죽자 급기야는 황실 안에 커다란 매음굴을 만드는데...

The film follows Jack Hopkins (played by Michael Craig), an aircraft designer with a passion for traction engines.
