미셸 공드리의 고모인 수제트는 1952년부터 1986년까지 교사로 재직했다. 그녀는 프랑스의 외딴 시골 마을 교사 시절의 일상에 대해 조카 마이클에게 이야기한다. 마이클은 그 동안 전혀 알지 못했던 가족에 대해 차츰 알게 된다. 이 영화는 오래된 8mm 기록장면과 과거를 기억하는 현재 사람들과의 인터뷰를 통해 평범한 가족에게 숨겨진 아픔을 잔잔하게 전달한다.

직업군인인 아내 그레이스는 이라크로 파병을 가고, 작은 마트에서 일하며 두 딸을 홀로 키우는 스탠리. 평범했던 어느날 아침, 아내의 전사소식을 전해 듣는다. 너무나 갑작스런 소식에 눈물조차 나오지 않고 하루 종일 멍하니 앉아만 있던 스탠리는 학교를 마치고 돌아온 귀여운 두 딸들에게 차마 엄마의 전사소식을 전하지 못한다. 힘든 내색조차 할 수 없던 스탠리는 아이들에게 지금 가장 가고 싶은 곳이 어디냐며 묻곤, 두 딸과 함께 무작정 여행을 떠나게 된다. 스탠리는 두 딸들에게 엄마의 죽음을 어떻게 전해야 할까…

멕시코 출신의 스테판은 일자리를 구해놓았다는 어머니의 말을 듣고 파리에 왔지만 스스로의 예술적 재능을 전혀 발휘할 수 없는 평범한 달력회사에서 일하게 된다. 어렸을 때부터 꿈과 현실을 구분하지 못했던 스테판은 이웃에 이사 온 스테파니를 흠모하며 그들이 운명적 관계라고 믿기 시작한다. 천진난만한 스테판에게 스테파니는 점점 마음을 빼앗긴다. 하지만 일의 스트레스와 사랑의 감정으로 점점 날뛰는 꿈에 정복당한 스테판의 대책 없는 행동은 스테파니를 당황하게 만들고, 두 사람은 점차 진심만으로 극복할 수 없는 상황으로 빠져드는데...
