Pam (Sims) gathers a group of college students to join her in a trek to an abandoned mine on a remote, forested mountain. Though her companions believe they are going to help reclaim and restore the area's environment, Pam knows of strange events in both the distant and recent past. Her interest appears to be more in the line of folklore and parapsychology than the environment. The group experiences a number of misfortunes and mysteries before arriving in the area of the mine. They soon encounter a hermit (Haggerty) living alone in a cabin and he seems to know quite a bit about the sinister nature of the region. All must confront and escape the evil that has lurked at the mine since a tragedy there in 1845.

벼락부자인 손톤 멜론에게는 두 가지 고민이 있다. 허영만 남은 두 번째 아내와의 부부관계가 점점 식어가고 있다는 것과 자기를 무척 싫어하는 외아들 제이슨이 그런 새어머니를 만나러 와주지 않는다는 것. 그러나 우등생에다 수영까지 좋아하는 아들 제이슨은 그에게 자랑거리다. 멜론은 문제가 있으면 바로 해결해야 한다고 생각, 아내가 바람 피는 장면을 사진으로 찍어 아내를 쫓아내고, 의기양양하게 대학으로 간다. 우등생인 줄로만 알았던 아들은 낙제생에다 친구도 단 한 명 뿐인 자신감이라고는 찾아볼 수 없는 처지. 아들에게 필요한 것은 자신감이라고 생각한 멜론은 중졸 학력이지만 돈으로 아들과 유일한 아들 친구와 함께 대학에 입학, 해괴한 일들을 벌인다. 과제를 내주면 작가를 기용해서 대신시킨다. 예를 들면 유명인에 대한 논문이 과제라면 그 유명인에게 돈을 주고 원고를 청탁하는 것. 이런 멜론의 행동을 싫어하는 대표격 교수는 경제학과 바베이. 멜론은 바베이의 애인이자 문학교수인 다이언까지 빼앗아 바베이의 코를 납작하게 만든다. 제이슨은 드디어 자신감을 회복, 수영부 정예선수로 발탁되고 발레리라는 여자 친구도 사귀지만 돈으로 수영선수에 발탁되었다는 야유를 듣고 충격을 받는다. 한편 멜론은 과제물을 청탁 맡긴 것이 발각되어 퇴학의 위기에 처하나 아들과 다이언의 도움으로 필사적으로 공부한다.

월터(Walter Fielding: 톰 행크스 분)는 룩크롤 밴드의 변호사이며, 안나(Anna Crowley: 셜리 롱 분)는 이혼한 바이얼리스트이다. 이들은 안나의 전 남편 아파트에서 함께 살다가 전 남편이 집에 오게 되자 집을 나온다. 이들은 당장 집을 살돈이 없지만 대부를 받게 되어 100만불짜리 집을 20만불에 사게 된다. 그러나 집을 산 기쁨도 잠시이고 그 집의 문턱을 넘어서는 순간 놀라운 사태를 목격하게 된다. 그것은 집이 산산히 부서지는 것이다. 대대적인 수리를 하면서 소동이 벌어진다.
