On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the film The Godfather III, director and screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola has created a new edit of the third and final part of The Godfather: Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, CODA: The Death Of Michael Corleone. Michael Corleone, reaching his sixties, wishes to distance himself from the mafia activities of his family and find a successor to his empire. However, his quest for respectability will confront him again with his demons and push him to fall back into gangsterism. The film benefits from a new beginning, a new ending, scene changes, shots and music more respectful of the original vision of author Mario Puzo and Coppola. This new opus offers, according to the director, "a more appropriate conclusion for The Godfather and The Godfather II".

Gianni is a political man with a good career waiting for him. Angela is his wife and she fakes an assault and a rape in a cinema. Eva is Gianni's lover and Angela's friend. Gianni and Eva decide to use the pretext of the assault to kill Angela. Later on Angela is blackmailed by a man who was present at her act. In the background there are Rosy, her maid always present, and a puzzling man who appears and disappears and makes strange phone calls.

Lucia (Natassja Kinski) is a volatile, exciteable young woman. She forms a romance with Carlo (Stefano Dionisi), who is somewhat callow and is very skittish. Their romance is not an easy one, but they are assisted in coping with its ups and downs by their mutual friendship with Franco (Franco Citti), an older, wiser and more stable man.

Alex is separated and has a young daughter, Elo. After a youth studded with failures at university and in political commitment, he leads a mediocre existence alongside Margit, his new partner, and his friends Pais and Capace. Margit invites Alex to Giangi's birthday party who, in the 70s, was involved in the death of his brother during a student demonstration. Alex discovers that Giangi is having a clandestine relationship with Margit.

Physician Robert Briand (Robin Renucci) runs a leper colony in the 15th century that takes in new residents who suffer from the ravages of syphilis. When the beautiful Marie-Blanche (Isabelle Pasco) is brought to the grim, prison-like facility, Robert finds she displays no apparent signs of disease. He risks everything when he falls in love with the woman and makes plans to run away with her. Erland Josephson plays Robert's father, with Piera Degli Esposti as Robert's faithful assistant Terese.

Sebastian, Chief Archer in the Roman Army, converts to Christianity. A favorite of Emperor Augustus, Sebastian's devotion to Christ eventually drives him to reject the Emperor's love, causing the Emperor to angrily order Sebastian to be shot with arrows by his fellow archers. The film retells this mystery play with a definite 'art-house' approach: an almost poetical use of language, singing, dancing, some homoerotic themes, and some special effects.

Two anarchistic brothers live by petty thievery and try to recover from their Catholic upbringing. Bandiera and Rabbino were children when they pushed their drunk of a father out of a window for killing their pet sheep. When a girl is raped by her father, she is brought by young "rescuers" to the home of the two brothers who then watch their friends take advantage of her sexually. The brothers take her in, and the three live happy and celibate if not uneventful lives until the brother's are sent to jail for stealing.
