모래에 묻혀가던 세타와 베르거는 다행히 몇몇 마을 사람들에 의해 발견되어 목숨을 건진다. 샨드라에게 불만을 가지고 있는 마을 사람들은 비밀리에 베르거와 세타를 간호한다. 하지만 가난한 농부들은 금새 상금에 눈이 어두워 그들을 샨드라에게 넘겨주고 만다. 한편 베르거의 매형인 건축가 로데는 아내 이레네와 함께 에쉬나푸어에 도착한다. 그러나 누구도 베르거의 행방에 대해 알려주지 않는다. 어느날 매우 뜻밖에 로데는 샨드라로부터 큰 무덤을 세우라는 명령을 받는다. 결국 강요에 못이긴 그는 무덤 건설에 동의한다.

Cafe owner Paul Perlacher is a real pig: not only are his daughter and sister Trude embarrassed constantly by his disgusting behavior, but his tenants are subjected to every legal trick under the Sun to get them to move out. Nevertheless, Amalie Hartning's a stubborn woman and can take care of herself well when it comes to her tyrannical landlord. If that weren't enough for Paul, his daughter's gone and fallen in love with the nephew of this pain in rear! And when Paul's ordered to jail by the courts, that really is the last straw.

프랑수아 트뤼포가 ‘진정한 작가’로 평가했던 거장 막스 오퓔스의 마지막 영화. 시네마 스코프와 풍부한 색감의 테크니컬러 등 당시로서는 매우 혁신적인 스타일을 선보인, 영화사적으로 상당히 주요한 작품이다. 19세기 사교계를 풍미했던 롤라가 서커스단의 주인공으로 등장해 플래시 백을 통해 자신의 과거를 들려주는 형식의 이 영화는 당시 제작사의 횡포로 다양한 버전의 판본이 존재하면서 정당한 평가를 받지 못했다.

Two nine-year-old girls—rude Luise Palfy and respectful shy Lotte Körner—meet on a summer camp. Apart from their different hair-do, they look alike. They have never seen each other before, but soon find out that they are identical twins. It turns out that their parents divorced, each keeping one of the girls. They decide to trade places at the end of the summer. Lottie curls her hair, Lisa braids hers, and both go off to where they have never been before. The adventure begins.
