After having been framed by gamblers, Muggs is barred from riding in horse races. Snce he can no longer race, he takes up a collection so Ma Brown, who owns the horses won't have her stable foreclosed on. However, one of the gamblers involved in the frame falls for Ma Brwn's daughter, and decides to come clean and confess to the police about the frame. The other gamblers hear about it and set out to shut him up and discredit Muggs and Ma Brown once and for all.

A teenage girl from a traditional family goes on a date with a pilot and ends up having sex with him. After the pilot dies in a plane crash, the girl discovers she is pregnant with his child.

마물리안은 30년대 할리우드에서 꾸준히 상상력이 넘치는 작업을 해온 감독으로 독특한 스타일과 매체를 다루는 숙련된 솜씨 모두를 갖추었다. 러시아에서 그는 스타니슬랍스키의 이론을 실천하던 연출가였던 전력을 살려 뉴욕에서 연극을 연출하다가 영화계에 입문하게 된다. 실험적이고 시적인 양식에 이끌려 이미 퇴색해버린 자연주의적인 색채를 버리고 연기와 춤, 음악, 맛깔스러운 대사, 무대 장식과 색깔을 조화롭게 연출할 줄 알았다. 노래와 춤이 섞인 드라마에 복합적인 카메라 움직임을 사용해서 정서를 극대화하고, 사운드의 효과를 잘 표현했다는 평가를 받는다. 는 갱스터의 사랑이야기로, 생략적인 내러티브의 사용이 돋보이고, 사실적인 대사와 움직임에 능통하며, 카메라의 구도도 탁월하게 사용되었다. 아이러니와 시니컬리즘에 입각한 그의 코미디는 루비치의 영화보다 훨씬 더 예민한 취향과 감각을 구사한다. 초기 작품은 루비치, 르네 클레르, 조지 큐커, 막스 오퓔스와 유사함을 보이고, 미넬리에게도 영향을 주었다. Lightnin' and Mary Jones are co-owners of a hotel built right on a state border, used by divorcing wives so they can pretend to be in California while establishing residency in Nevada.
