영화의 주무대는 생 라자르의 호텔 콩코드. 초라하게 결혼한 프랑수아즈(나탈리 베이 분)와 에밀(클로드 브라쇠 분)은 자신들에게 막대한 돈을 빚지고 있는 복싱 매니저인 짐 폭스 워너(조니 할리데이 분)에게 빚을 받아내려고 한다. 하지만 짐 폭스는 마피아에게도 빚을 지고 있어서, 복싱 경기를 치러 궁지를 모면해보려고 한다. 그러나 이것만으로도 빛을 갚기엔 부족하다. 그 사이, 느뵈 형사(장 피에르 로 분)가 2년 전에 발생한 살인사건을 해결하기 위해 조사를 시작하는데...

갱단의 일 원인 카르멘은 일당과 함께 털고자 하는 은행의 무장경찰을 사랑하게 된다. 그녀가 그를 유혹하고자 하는 바람에 두 명의 동료가 비극적인 결말을 맞게 된다. 줄거리 자체는 아주 평범해 보이지만 뒤죽박죽 얽힌 네러티브와 몇몇 장면의 독특한 처리 방식 때문에 묘한 분위기가 연출된다. 특히, 은행습격장면은 그것을 바라보는 냉소적인 시선으로 인해 익살맞은 장면으로 둔갑한다. 이 영화는 영화사학자들과 영화광들로부터 가장 큰 호평을 받은 고다르 감독의 후기 걸작이다.
