Jacob's farm is in trouble from a severe drought. Jacob and Sarah begin to wonder if Sarah can stay, and what will happen to Jacob if she and the children have to leave the farm.

Kansas, 1910. Widowed farmer Jacob Witting finds that taking care of both his farm and two children, Anna and Caleb, is too difficult to handle alone. John takes out an ad in a newspaper for a mail-order bride, to which the "plain and tall" Sarah Wheaton answers, soon traveling from Maine to Kansas to become John's wife. Despite the love that grows between Sarah and the family, Sarah finds herself homesick, and she must ultimately choose whether or not to stay.

During World War 2 the Germans arrested people at random off the streets of Paris and in retaliation to sabotage by the resistance announced the execution of one in ten prisoners. Chosen as one of the victims, lawyer Chavel trades his place with another man in return for all his possessions. At the end of the war he returns to his house and tries to integrate himself with the family of the man who traded places with him, all the while hiding his true identity. However matters are complicated when a stranger arrives claiming to be Chavel.

빌리 더 키드를 흉내내며 마을의 은행을 터는 강도 일당 벅스 보워 팀은 또 다시 은행을 털기 위해 글래드스톤이라는 청교도 마을로 향한다. 그레이엄(찰슨 브론슨 분)은 은행을 털기 전 은행을 털던 자신들이 모조리 발각되어 다 죽어버리는 꿈을 꾸게된다. 그래서 그레이엄은 말이 다리를 다쳤다는 핑계로 혼자 뒤쳐지게 되고, 저택에서 사는 과부 아만다의 집에 침입하여 아만다를 겁탈하게 된다. 그러나 두 사람은 단순히 겁탈이 아니라, 격렬한 섹스를 나누게 되고. 영화제목 정오에서 3시까지는 두 사람이 나누는 섹스의 시간을 의미한다. 그리고 그레이엄은 떠돌이 생활을 끝내고, 아만다와 정착할 계획을 세우게 되는데...그때 마을로부터 그레이엄의 동료들이 은행을 털다 모조리 잡혀 저녁 5시에 교수형이 집행된다는 소식이 전해지고 아만다는 그레이엄에게 빨리 가서 동료들을 구하라고 요구하게 된다. 만약 당신이 지금 가서 그들을 구할 시도를 하지 않으면 평생 나 때문이라고 말할 것이라며 그를 재촉하는데. 이미 일당들에게 흥미가 없어진 그레이엄은 마을로 향하는 척 하다가, 나무 밑에서 동료들이 죽을 때까지 기다리게 된다. 그러나 추격대들이 그레이엄이 일당이라는 정보를 입수하고, 그를 추격하게 되자, 그레이엄은 지나가던 이동 치과병원의 의사를 기절시키고 자신이 그 의사의 옷을 입고 탈출하고, 기절해 있던 의사는 그대로 교수형을 당한 채 아만다의 집에 끌려 오게된다. 마침내 죽은 그레이엄의 시체를 보고 아만다는 기절해버리고, 동네 사람들은 아만다를 부정한 여자로 취급하지만, 아만다는 사람들 앞에서 당당히 말한다. "나는 내 인생에서 그 정오에서 3시까지를 결코 잊지 못합니다!"마침 지나가던 소설가가 그 대사를 듣고는 아만다의 비극적인 러브스토리를 소설로 써서 엄청난 히트를 기록하게 되어 아만다에게는 하루에도 수천통의 팬레터가 쇄도하고, 아만다의 집은 관광명소가 되어 버리는데...

30년이나 은행원으로 성실하게 살아온 베르두는 불황으로 하루 아침에 실업자가 되자 새로운 사업을 시작한다. 그는 부유한 마담들이 놀고 먹는 것을 보고 그런 사회 기생충을 말살하는 것은 죄가 아니라고 생각하게 된다. 그 결과 돈있는 과부들을 설득해서 결혼한 뒤 신부를 죽임으로써 여자들의 재산을 빼앗는 것이다. 베르두는 사람을 죽여도 독이 검출되지 않는 동물 안락사용 독약의 처방을 알아낸다. 약을 실험하기 위해 거리에서 방황하는 젊은 여자를 집으로 데려오지만 그녀에게 감동해서 차마 독약을 먹이지 못하고 오히려 돈을 줘서 보낸다. 대신 그 약은 베르두를 수상히 여기고 추적하던 형사가 마시고 죽는데, 그는 심장마비로 판명된다. 베르두의 다음 계획은 그로스니 부인과의 결혼이었다. 끈질긴 구애작전 끝에 결혼식을 치루는 날, 리용에 있어야 할 몇 번째인가의 아내 보뇌 부인이 나타나서 베르두는 허둥지둥 달아나고 결혼식은 무산된다. 그로니스 부인은 그를 찾아달라고 신고하고, 경찰은 다시 수사에 착수한다. 마침내 배르두는 체포되어 길로틴의 이슬로 사라지는데, 그는 끝내 사회가 자신을 그렇게 만들었다고 믿는다.
