Fredrik Egerman is very happy in his marriage to a seventeen-year-old virgin, Anne. Toothsome Tracy Reed (remember her in Dr. Strangelove and A Shot in the Dark?) heads the cast of Deadly Females. The ladies in question are female assassins, specializing in knocking off lascivious males. Like the proverbial black widow spider, the girls lure their victims with promises of sexual favors, then strike when said victims are exhausted. Naturally, this requires plenty of exposed female flesh.

1909년 영국 요크셔(Yorkshire, England). 데이브와 토미는 엠스데일이라는 작은 탄광촌에서 탄광 사고로 아빠를 잃고 루크라는 새 아빠와 살고 있다. 엠스데일에서는 석탄을 나르는 말들을 쓰고 있는데, 데이브와 토미는 그 중에서도 일 잘하는 플래쉬를 제일 좋아한다. 그러던 중 새로운 광산 감독이 오고 그는 광산의 적자를 해소하기 위해 말들을 없애고 석탄을 운반하는 기계를 들여놓기로 한다. 그에게는 알리스라는 데이브 또래의 딸이 하나 있다. 말들이 도살장으로 보내질 거라는 이야기를 들은 셋은 말들을 구해내기로 하고 폐쇄된 갱도를 통해 말을 꺼내온다. 한편 광부들은 말들을 없앤다는 소리에 자신들의 생계를 걱정하게 되고 급기야는 파업을 하게 된다. 하지만 파업이 계속되면 광산이 문을 닫을 거라는 말에 작업에 복귀한 날 폭발사고가 생기고 갱도에 갇힌 사람들은 영리한 플래쉬의 도움으로 무사히 구출된다. 플래쉬는 빠져나오지 못한 채 탄광에서 숨을 거둔다. 이에 광산 주인은 자신의 땅을 말들을 위한 목장으로 내놓고 모든 마을 사람들이 모여 파티를 하는데...

조용한 성격의 수학자 데이비드(David Sumner: 더스틴 호프만 분)는 관능적인 여인 에이미(Amy Sumner: 수잔 죠지 분)와 결혼하여 도시의 폭력을 피해 그녀의 고향인 작은 마을로 이사간다. 하지만 곧 그들은 그곳이 더 폭력적이라는 것을 발견하게 된다. 차고를 짓기 위해 네 명의 주민을 고용하면서 그들의 삶은 아주 불쾌하기 그지없게 된다. 그들의 고양이가 매달려 죽은 시체로 발견되기도 하고 유약한 데이비드에게 쏟아지는 마을 주민들의 움직임도 심상치 않다. 이때 에이미의 옛 애인이었던 헤네이의 등장으로 두 사람의 신경은 더욱 날카로워진다. 데이비드는 그들과 맞설 것을 결심하고 차고도 혼자 힘으로 만들겠다고 다짐하지만 그들의 사냥 여행에 같이 가자는 제의를 뿌리치지 못한다. 화가 난 에이미를 남겨 놓고 여행을 떠났지만 데이비드는 곧 사냥터에 혼자 남게 된 것을 알게 된다. 헤네이와 그의 동료들은 돌아와 에이미를 강간한다. 얼마 후 혼자 버려진 것에 화를 내며 데이비드가 돌아오지만 에이미는 강간에 대해서 말하지 않는다.
