Richard Ward, (March 15, 1915 – July 1, 1979) was a gravel-voiced African American actor on the stage, television, and in films, from 1949 until his death. Though best known through his TV appearances late in life, both in sitcoms and police procedurals, Ward also had an extensive film resume and a distinguished stage career, one of the highlights of the latter being his portrayal of Willy Loman in the 1972 production of Death of a Salesman, staged in Baltimore's Center Stage (the first African American production of Arthur Miller's signature opus, produced with the playwright's blessing); Ward's own favorite among his theatrical vehicles was Ceremonies in Dark Old Men.

웨이크 필드 교도소에 새로 부임하는 헨리 브루베이커는 교도소의 실정을 알기위해 스스로 죄수처럼 가장하고 잠입한다. 죄수로 생활하면서 어느 정도 사정을 알게 된 브루베이커는 교도소 개선을 위해 힘껏 일하지만 교도소 밖 사람들의 따가운 눈총을 받게 되고 전통적으로 교도소 죄수들을 노동력으로 이용하던 사람들에게 협조도 하지 않자 그들은 모두 브루베이커를 싫어한다. 하지만 꿋꿋하게 자기 일에 최선을 다해 가던 중, 웨이크 필드 교도소에서 거의 반평생을 보낸 아브라함이란 죄수에게서 사체 유기 사실을 듣게 된다. 아브라함은 그 사실을 누설한 것 때문에 부패한 모범수들중 대장격인 휴이에게 죽음을 당하고 이에 분개한 브루베이커는 사체 발굴에 들어간다. 이에 주지사나 상원의원은 문제가 야기될까 봐 두려워하며 브루베이커에게 일을 중단하도록 압력을 넣는다. 하지만 브루베이커는 드디어 사체발굴에 성공하고 언론에 알려서 세인의 관심을 집중시키게 된다. 그 일로 브루베이커는 해임을 당하게 되고 신임 소장이 다시 부임하게 되지만 웨이크필드의 죄수들 마음엔 브루베이커가 정의의 횃불로 남게 된다.

바보 네이빈

정신박약아로 버려져 흑인 가정에서 자란 바보 청년 네이빈(스티븐 마틴)은 어느날 자립하기로 큰 결심을 하고 집을 나선다. 바보기는 하지만 정직하고 순진한 매력이 있어 해리(잭키 메이슨)의 주유소에 취직한다. 주유소에 온 손님 스탠(빌 마시)의 안경이 고장나자 네이빈이 렌즈 사이에 손잡이 겸 코걸이 장치를 만들어 준다. 이후 네이빈은 놀이 공원에 취직했다가, 오토바이 묘기에 흥미를 갖는다. 그 난폭한 오토바이 묘기수에 의해 네이빈은 여자와의 첫 잠자리를 갖게 된다. 그가 어릴 때 어머니가 커서 알게 될 것이라 말해주던 '특별 용도'을 사용하게 된 것이었다. 그러다, 미용사인 마리(버나뎃 피터스)라는 금발 여인을 만난다. 그녀는 네이빈의 순진함에 반하지만, 그가 바보라 어쩔 수 없이, 첫 잠자리 후 그의 곁의 떠난다. 네이빈이 고안한 안경을 가지고 갔던 스탠은 그 손잡이 안경으로 특허를 내서 일약 거부가 되고, 약속대로 수익의 절반을 주자 바보는 졸지에 백만장자가 되는데...
