Felix's daughter Edna is getting married, and his wife Gloria throws him out of the house for a few days, so that she can plan the wedding herself, without him getting in the way. Felix temporarily moves in with Oscar, who is still living in the same apartment from the TV show. Due to throat cancer, Oscar had to have one of his vocal cords removed, and he can only speak in a raspy whisper. Meanwhile, plans for the wedding are going on, and things get complicated when Felix finds out that Edna's fiancé has been divorced twice.

The most glittering, expensive, and exhausting videotaping session in television history took place Friday February 19, 1982 at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The event, for which ticket-buyers payed up to $1,000 a seat (tax-deductible as a contribution to the Actors' Fund) was billed as "The Night of 100 Stars" but, actually, around 230 stars took part. And most of the audience of 5,800 had no idea in advance that they were paying to see a TV taping, complete with long waits for set and costume changes, tape rewinding, and the like. Executive producer Alexander Cohen estimated that the 5,800 Radio City Music Hall seats sold out at prices ranging from $25 to $1,000. The show itself cost about $4 million to produce and was expected to yield around $2 million for the new addition to the Actors Fund retirement home in Englewood, N. J. ABC is reputed to have paid more than $5 million for the television rights.

회사에서 대외 홍보직을 맡고 있는 조 클레이(잭 레몬), 그는 항상 이런 저런 술자리와 파티를 따라다니느라 한시라도 손에서 술이 떠날 날이 없다. 그러던 어느 날 고객의 요청으로 선상 파티에 여자들을 데리고 가는 중에 고객 회사 비서인 크리스틴(리 레믹)을 그런 여자 중 하나로 오인하지만 조의 끈질긴 요청에 저녁 약속을 허락하고 둘은 함께 저녁을 먹으며 즐거운 시간을 보내고 술 한 모금 하지 못하던 크리스틴은 조를 만나면서 서서히 술 맛을 알아가고 이후 둘의 관계는 급진전하여 결혼도 하고 아이도 낳는다. 하지만 결혼 후에도 매일 접대로 늦는 남편 때문에 크리스틴은 외로운 밤을 술로 달래고 남편이 먼 지방으로 좌천되어 서로 떨어져 살게 되자 외로움이 극에 달한 크리스틴은 술에 취해 담배 불을 붙여놓고 잠드는 바람에 아파트에 불을 낸다. 결국 조까지 회사에서 해고되고 조는 문득 술어 쪄들어 망가진 자신과 아내의 모습에 뭔가를 깨닫는다. 이 후 두 사람은 크리스틴의 아버지 농장으로 내려가 술을 끊고 잊었던 일상의 행복을 잠시 느끼지만 어느 날 밤 다시 시작한 술로 인해 알코올 중독자 재활 병원으로 가게 된다. 그러나 조는 알코올 중독자 모임에 나가면서 점차 건강을 회복하는 반면 아내 크리스틴은 자신이 알코올 중독자라는 사실을 인정 못하고 더욱 술에 의존해 간다. 아내를 설득하다가 조 또한 다시 술을 입에 대고 또 다시 병원에 실려 간다. 다시 병원에서 나온 조는 알코올 중독 치료를 거부하는 아내를 끝내 설득하지 못하고 너무도 사랑하지만 어쩔 수 없이 떠나보낸다.
