로멜로(Roemello Skuggs: 웨슬리 스나입스 분)는 고등학교를 1등으로 졸업한 수재였으나 태어나서 자란 할렘의 영향으로 어두운 세계로 빠져 들어 그의 형 레이와 함께 작은 마약조직을 이룬다. 마약때문에 그의 어머니도 잃고 아버지도 폐인이 된 상태에서 그의 부모를 그렇게 만든 거스(Gus Molino: 아베 비고다 분) 일당에 대한 반감을 감추고 그들과 거래를 한다. 그러나 그들과의 거래에서 문제가 생기면서 어릴 적부터의 친구인 릭키(Ricky Goggles: 스티브 해리스 분)가 거스 일당에게 죽음을 당하는 사건이 발생한다. 거스 일당과 문제가 커지면서 거스 일당은 로멜로의 목숨을 노리고 사귀던 멜리샤(Melissa: 테레사 랜들 분)는 릭키의 죽음을 목격하고 어린 소년까지 죽자 그녀는 로멜로 곁을 떠난다. 로멜로는 그런 세계에서 발을 빼려 하지만 형인 레이가 극구 말린다. 레이는 그가 증오하던 폐인이 된 아버지가 아편 과다 복용으로 죽자 거스 일당을 모조리 죽여 버리고 로멜로를 만나 떠나지 말고 함께 일할 것을 종용한다. 둘은 다투게 되고 총이 오발하여 로멜로가 쓰러지며 그가 죽인 것으로 안 이는 스스로 목숨을 끊는다. 그 후 로멜로는 목숨을 건져 새 생활을 시작한다.
