미군 죄수였던 죠(찰스 브론슨 분)는 프랑스로 이주해 과거의 일을 모두 잊고 새로운 아내(리브 울만 분)와 열 두 살난 딸과 함께 살고 있다. 낚시 배를 타며 가정의 행복을 위해 열심히 일하던 죠에게 옛 동료였던 로스(제임스 메이슨 분)가 이끄는 갱들이 들이닥치고 죠는 어쩔 수 없이 사건에 휘말리게 된다. 사실 로스 일당은 지난 날 죠의 배신으로 인해 몇 년간을 감옥에서 썩어야 했다. 이들은 배신에 대한 복수로 죠를 사건에 끌어들인다. 그들의 계획은 숨겨놓은 마약을 죠의 낚시배를 이용해 다른 나라로 빼돌리는 것. 로스 일당은 죠의 새 아내와 딸을 인질로 죠를 위협하고, 죠는 막다른 길에서 그들을 도울 수 밖에 없는 입장이다. 더구나 로스 일당 중의 한 명인 새디스트적인 악질 강간범 카탠가(쟝 토빠르 분)는 죠의 새 아내 화비안느와 딸을 호시탐탐 노리고 있다. 그렇게 가족을 지키기 위한 죠와 갱들과의 한판 승부가 시작된다.
