무대극으로도대호평을 받았던 윌리 러셀의 작품을 충실하게 화면에 옮긴 수작. 이 작품은 국내 공연에서도 호평을 받은 바가 있다. 유명한 연극의 영화화이면서도 여러모로 이색적이기도 하다. 원작의 분위기를 크게 해치지 않으면서도 영화만이 가질 수 있는 특성을 잘 살려서 작품화시켰으며, 007 시리즈를 비롯하여 오락성강한 영화들의 대가였던 길버트 감독이 의외로 차분하고 정감어린 연출솜씨를 보여주었다. 그는 그 후로도 이라는 여성 무대극의 영화화를 맡았다. 관록의 명우 마이클 케인이 최고의 연기를 보여준 작품이기도 하지만, 거칠기 짝이 없는 런던 사투리를 종횡무진으로 구사하며 그를 압도한 주연여우 줄리 월터스는 이 작품이 영화 데뷔작이면서도 무대를 성공으로 이끌었던 연기력을 마음껏 발휘했다. 비록 에서 열연한 셜리 맥크레인에게 수상은 빼앗겼지만, 아카데미 여우주연상 후보에도 올랐다. 정말 매력이 넘치는 역할이었다. 자신감을 잃고 방황하는 영문학 교수와 무언가 새로운 인생을 개척해 보려고 개방대학을 지원한 젊은 주부 직장여성과의 인간적인 교류가 따뜻하게 펼쳐지면서, 삶의 의미를 다시 한 번 생각하게 해준다. 과연 인간의 진정한 가치는 무엇으로 판단할 수 있는가? 하는 문제에 대해서 이 영화는 통속적인 판단기준을 단호히 거부하고, 소위 지식인이라는 사람들의 위선을 통렬히 고발하고 있는 것이다. 전자음악의 대가인 데이빗 헨첼의 음악도 일품이다.
