젊고 예쁘고 자유로운 성관념을 가진 재능있는 사진작가 클레리아(Clelia: 소피 마르소 분)는 끈질기게 스카웃 제의를 해온 맥로이라는 큰 잡지사의 제안을 받아들여 어머니와 함께 유럽으로 거처를 옮긴다. 그러나 죽음을 앞둔 어머니에게서 자신을 고용한 맥로이 회장(Rupert MacRoi: 미쉘 수보어 분)이 자신이 태어나기 전 어머니가 파리 여행에서 만난 연인이었으며 어렴풋이 자신이 그의 딸임을 눈치채게 된다. 그녀는 어느날 길 모퉁이 꽃집에서 사진을 찍다 만나게 된 클레베(Cleve: 파스칼 그레고리 분)라는 남자를 만나게 된다. 클레리아는 그의 순수하면서도 묘한 매력에 이끌려 하룻밤을 보내고 결혼을 하지만, 그녀의 곁엔 연하의 사진작가 네모(Nemo: 기욤 카네 분)가 있다. 클레리아는 네모와 뜨거운 사랑에 빠지고, 클레베는 혼자 남겨지게 되는 데. 클레리아의 사랑을 잃어버린 클레베는 깊은 마음의 상처를 받고 방황하다 급기야 불륜의 증거를 찾기위해 그녀에게 파파라치까지 붙이게 된다.

A well-bred, lovely, spiritual, sad young woman marries an attentive physician who loves her. She feels affection but no love. Soon after, without design, she falls in love with Pedro Abrunhosa, a poet and performance artist. He also loves her. She keeps her distance from him, confessing her love to a friend who is a nun and, later, to her husband. Hunger for her love and jealousy consume him; she attends him as he wastes away. With his death, she can marry and express her passion, but what she does and how she explains herself, particularly to her cloistered friend, is at the heart of the film. Glimpses of convent life and of Abrunhosa on stage give contrast and mute comment.

When a young teen marries the Prince of Cleves, more than twice her age, she automatically becomes an official Princess and takes her new position to heart. Although distracted by the elite entertainments found at court, the princess cannot help but mourn her impossible love for the dashing Duc de Nemours.
