중국 공안부의 일급보안요원 리걸(이연걸 분)은 어느날 괴한으로부터 아내와 자식들을 잃는 참사를 겪은뒤 죄책감에 시달려 사직서를 제출한다. 복수를 결심하지만 막상 범인에 대해 아는 것이라곤 범행 순간 들었던 목소리뿐. 2년 뒤 리걸은 이름을 리대당으로 바꾸고 홍콩의 영화촬영 현장에서 스턴트맨으로 일하게 된다. 한편 암흑가의 두목 퓨은 호텔에서 열리는 보석전시장을 터는 계획을 세운다. 전시회 날 룡위와 함께 호텔에 도착한 리대당은 초청장이 없어서 정문에서 제지당한다. 룡위를 들여보낸 리대당은 우연히 어떤 목소리를 듣고 놀라는데, 그 목소리는 바로 끊임없이 자신을 괴롭히던 과거의 그 목소리였다. 그는 전시장 안으로 사라지는 목소리의 주인공을 쫓아가지만 따라잡지 못한다. 호텔로 들어간 의생은 무자비한 폭력으로 전시회장을 털고 룡위와 영화사 사장을 비롯해 수많은 사람들을 인질로 잡는다. 리대당은 그들을 구출하러 죽음과의 한판에 뛰어드는데.
