부자 가족 힐크리스트는 자신들의 땅에 공장을 짓기 위해 가난한 농부가 보낸 투자사기 전문가 혼블로워와 싸움을 시작한다.
그러던 어느 날 힐크리스트 부인은 혼블로워의 부인이 매춘을 했다는 사실을 알게 되고 이 사실을 그의 사업에 이용하여 협박편지를 보낸다. 그러자 결국 클로 혼블로워 부인은 자살을 하게 된다.
