뇌과학자 에츠코와 유키오 부부는 전쟁 전 만주에서 촬영된 뇌실험의 모습이 담긴 필름을 보게 된다. 피험자들은 무언가를 응시하고 있다. 그 순간 스크린에 거대한 흰 빛이 나타나고 에츠코와 유키오, 우연히 방에 들어 온 어린 딸 미유키는 빛에 눈을 빼앗긴다. 17년 후, 집단 자살을 시도한 미유키는 에츠코가 경영하는 병원의 격리 병동에서 깨어난다. 필름을 본 후로 비합법적인 뇌수술을 시행하고 있었던 에츠코. 미유키는 에츠코 몰래 격리 병동을 탈출하고 사라진 미유키를 찾던 동생 카오리는 미유키가 자살 시도를 했던 폐가에서 딴사람과 같이 변해 버린 미유키와 만난다. 에츠코는 미유키를 다시 격리 병동으로 데려가고 그들에게 상상을 초월하는 공포가 방문한다. 가족들과의 일상적인 삶에 지친 여고생 노리코는 인터넷으로 알게 된 친구를 찾아 도쿄로 가출한다. 우에노 역에서 노리코는 구미코를 만나고 그녀와 함께 외로운 사람들의 가족을 연기해주는 대행업을 시작한다. 그 무렵 신주쿠 역에서 여고생 54인의 집단자살이 벌어지고, 노리코의 아버지가 딸을 찾아 올라오면서 점차 그들 사이의 긴장이 고조된다.
