The emperor's forces pursue Shi: first a woman, then a general seek to overpower him with lust and might. Over the course of the film, the reds of battle give way to blues of meditation.

청나라 마지막 황제 선통제 말엽 도처에서 반청의 물결이 일자 내시들이 앞을 다투어 은퇴한다. 세도가 당당한 내시 소덕장이 조상의 제사를 지내기 위해 고향에 내려오는데 가난하게 사는 마을 아이들은 소덕장의 당당한 모습을 보고 내시가 되면 출세길이 열리는 것으로 생각한다. 9살 내회는 내시가 되겠다고 아버지를 설득, 거세까지 했으나 청나라가 망한 것을 안 내회의 부모는 그를 북으로 보내 창을 배우게 한다. 내회는 '옥란'이라는 예명으로 무대에 오르는 어릴적 친구 초제를 만나게 되나 초제는 내회를 혁명당원으로 오해한다. 내회와 초제는 유흥가를 도망치기로 약속하나 내회가 내시임을 안 초제는 화를 내며 가버린다.
