1839년 어느 봄날, 광주 주강변 영국대사관 앞에 교수대가 세워지고 유죄선고를 받은 사람들이 교수형에 처해진다. 광장에 몰려든 수만여 백성들과 영국 상인들. 바로 청조 도광제(소민 분)의 특명 하에 조정대신 임칙서의 아편 금지령에 따라 아편판매상들을 처벌 하는 것이다. 당시 중국에서는 아편이 크게 유행했고, 공직자들은 영국 상인들의 아편밀수를 눈감아주는 대신 거액의 뇌물을 챙기고, 중국인들은 아편을 구하기 위해 온갖 수단을 가리지 않았다. 임칙서는 아편 근절의 강력한 정책의 일환으로 아편상들에게서 아편을 전부 몰수하기에 이른다. 1839년 6월, 임칙서는 거둬들인 2만여 개의 아편 상자를 호문에서 모두 소각시킨다. 이것은 세계 역사상 최초로 정부차원에서 마약을 금지하는 처분이었다. 이에 분노한 중국에 주둔해 있던 영국인들은 청정부가 영국 정부의 재산을 없앤다는 이유로 영국정부에 출병을 요청한다. 빅토리아 여왕의 후원아래 영국의회는 271표 대 262표의 미세한 차이로 중국 침략 허가서를 승인한다. 해상강국 영국함대는 중국 근해를 거쳐 북경까지 들어오게 된다. 사건이 이렇게 되자 임칙서는 전쟁의 빌미를 제공했다는 모함을 받게 되고 도광제는 그의 관직을 박탈, 대신 기선(임연곤 분)을 사령으로 임명하게 된다. 영국 군함과 대포를 본 기선은 중국이 패할 것이라 생각해 영국과 협상하려 하는데...

충량(장국영)은 부모를 잃고 누나(하새비)가 살고 있는 팡가에서 같이 지내게 된다. 그러나 아편 중독자인 매형은 그에게 아편 시중을 들게 할 뿐만 아니라 누나와 성적 관계를 맺게 하려 한다. 아편에 취한 누나 또한 충량을 유혹하고 충량은 죄책감에 시달리다 매형의 아편에 비상을 넣어 식물인간이 되게 한 후 팡가를 떠난다. 북경행 열차에 몸을 실은 충량은 폭력배의 보스를 만나 상해에 내린다. 당시 국제 도시로서의 면모를 과시하던 상해는 아편 향기와 홍등가가 도시를 뒤덮고 있었다. 충량은 유한마담을 유혹한 후 협박, 갈취하는 지골로로 명성을 날리나 어린 날의 상처로 인해 어느 여자도 사랑할 수가 없다. 팡씨 일가의 후계자 지명을 놓고 충량의 보스는 그를 팡가로 보내 류이(공리)를 유혹하게 한다. 여자에게만은 철저한 프로임을 자처했던 충량은 류이에게 진심으로 사랑을 느끼자 혼란에 빠지고, 성적 욕구불만과 질투의 화신이 된 충량의 누나가 집안을 폭풍같은 감정의 소용돌이 속으로 몰아가자 충량은 다시 상해로 떠나게 된다.

Directed by some of most well known Chinese-language directors of the time, the portmanteau film Four Moods was an attempt to alleviate Li Han-hsiang’s financial troubles during the late 1960s. Arguably one of his best works, King Hu’s short Anger is an adaptation of the famous Peking opera San Cha Kou; set to opera instrumentation and stylishly shot, the film deftly captures the tense showdown between political schemers, avengers and vagabonds inside an inn.
