프란체스코는 고향을 파탄에 빠뜨린 전쟁에서 고통과 비리를 느낀다. 감옥에 들어간 프란체스코는 영혼이 산산조각이 났다고 믿고 있던 중 출감시 한권의 책을 들고 나온다. 복음서였다. 그는 그 책속에서 영혼의 구원을 얻는다. 전 재산을 처분해 불쌍한 사람들에게 나눠주려는 프란체스코를 처음엔 경멸하던 사람들이 점점 호응을 하게 되고 특히 그의 어릴 적 여자친구 키아라는 그를 헌신적으로 도와준다. 교황을 알현키 위해 로마를 떠난 프란체스코를 따르는 신도들이 급증하고 그는 자기희생과 금욕적 생활의 화신이 된다. 마침내 그는 죽고 사도들은 성프란체스코가 생전에 남긴 업적과 행위를 기리며 회상에 잠긴다.

In this loose remake of Black Sunday (1960), a group of skiers in Northern Italy land in a huge crevasse where they find the body of a long dead girl covered by a mask. Out of curiosity and nothing better to do they remove the mask and start playing games with it. Turns out this dead girl is the witch Anibas who had been condemned to die by burning and the mask put on her face to prevent her return.

These people manifest different approaches to a romantic partnership that are tested in their brief encounters in Rome.

The story tells the life, the successes, the loves and the decadence of Augustine Caroline Otéro Iglesias, called "La Bella Otéro". The history of a Spanish actor, who - despite being born poor - became a symbol of the Belle Époque and one of the first dives of silent cinema.

이탈리아 남부에 위치한 사르데냐 섬에 살고 있는 소년 가비노는 폭력적이고 권위적인 아버지 밑에서 제대로 학교 공부도 마치지 못한 채 산속으로 들어가 양을 치고 젖을 짜는 양치기로 생활한다. 걸핏하면 폭력을 휘두르는 아버지에 대한 공포심을 이겨내지 못한 채 고립된 섬에서 원치 않는 일을 하며 유년 시절을 보내고 청년으로 성장한 가비노는 스물한살이 되던 해, 마을에 흘러 들어온 아코디언 악사의 연주를 듣고 새로운 세계를 경험하게 된다. 하지만 양과 바꿔 겨우 얻은 아코디언은 섬 밖의 세계에 대한 가비노의 열망만 더욱 크게 만들 뿐이다. 그러던 어느 날, 양치는 일만으로 생계를 꾸리기 힘들어지자 아버지는 또다시 강제로 가비노를 군대에 입대시킨다. 하지만 오히려 군대는 가비노에게 이탈리아 표준어와 라틴어, 그리고 그리스어까지 다양한 언어를 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공해주고, 어린 시절 못다 했던 학업에 대한 열정을 새롭게 키워주는 계기가 된다. 복무를 마친 가비노는 고향으로 다시 돌아오지만 강압적인 아버지 밑에서 양치기로 살아야 하는 상황은 달라진 것이 없다. 끝내 아버지와의 사르데냐에서의 삶을 거부하고, 사르데냐 지역의 방언을 연구해 이 분야의 권위자로 뒤늦은 꿈을 이룬다.
