정부로부터 일을 맡는 킬러 제임스는 어느날 런던에 잡혀있는 테러리스트인 자하르를 처치해 달라는 살인 의뢰를 받는다. 가까스로 임무를 완수하고 탈출에 성공하지만 몸에 심한 상처를 입는다. 은신처에서 고통받는 그에게 고아인 어린 소녀 에밀리가 도움을 주게 되고 둘은 서로를 도와주는 친구가 된다. 하지만 이내 제임스는 영국와 미국의 첩보부가 모두 자신을 노리는 것을 알게 된다. 자신을 쫓는 정부 요원들과 추적자들을 제거 하면서 필사의 탈출을 시도하게 되는데......

Nathalie Monnier is 14, her parents are splitting up, and what's worse, their apartment is going to be put up for sale. Just about everything in her life is about to be shattered. So it makes a bit of sense that she is receptive to the possibility of selling her soul for the chance to keep all this from happening. Just as her parents are (of course) getting back together, she wins the lottery and is able to buy their old apartment.

To remedy the problem, The security forces crack down on vandals, bands of protesters and other iconoclasts. And for greater efficiency the States uses the services of Kief, a mad scientist who operates on prisoners so as to pair them with totem-objects. Which is why Judith gets wrinkles when her clothes are creased. Which is why the skin of librarian Mikoski gets pierced with holes whenever rats gnaw at his books.

Then she's rescued by millionaire Max Topfer, who is startled to discover in her possession a video showing him being shot by a man he doesn’t know. Both the girl, who has total amnesia, and the tape appear to have come from the future. With the aid of bodyguard Helmut, Max Topfer tries to find out why a total stranger is apparently going to kill him on camera.
