Karin Hanazono is an orphan, living with her relatives. Her life has never been easy, her studies are not well, she is not the best in sports and technically she is miserable. Left with only a ring as a memento from her departed mother, she suddenly finds her life changed, as she was mourning her pet cat, Shii-chan. On that night she met a strange boy, Kazune Kujyou. After that event, she experiences several mysterious incidences that soon led her to find out that she is a little goddess. Finding others like her she soon sets out to understand herself better as her mysterious powers grow and she becomes beset by opponents.

1974년, 평범한 가정에서 태어난 케이코는 가족들 모두에게 축복이었고 은총이었다. 그러나 아이의 성장과 함께 점차 드러나는 이상하고 불길한 징후들…. 불안해진 부모는 마침내 병원을 찾게 되고 청천벽력과 같은 의사의 말에 절망한다.
…선천성 청각장애와 함께 발달장애… 말을 못해 답답한 아이는 닥치는 대로 물건을 집어 던지고, 엄마의 얼굴을 할퀴고, 이웃집에 벌거벗고 들어가 아수라장을 만들고, 그래도 견디다 못하면 벽에다 몸을 부딪혀 피투성이가 되기도 했다. 그와 함께 단란했던 한 가정도 무참하게 깨지며 파멸 속으로 잠겨 들었다. 하지만 어느 날, 천식발작으로 사경에 빠진 케이코가 애절한 노력 끝에 죽음마저 극복하고 일어서자 부모는 확신을 가지게 된다. 아이와 함께 행복하게 살 수 있는 길이 반드시 있을 거라고. 청각과 기타 장애를 함께 가진 아이들만의 유치부를 거쳐 초등학교에 입학한 케이코. 여전히 어렵고 힘든 날들이었지만 혼자 밥도 먹게 되고, 자기 이름도 쓰게 되고, 생리현상마저 혼자 처리하기에 이르기까지 케이코는 나날이 변화하며 밝게 성장해 간다. 그 동안 아이들에게 있었던 절망의 표정이 사실은 부모와 주변 사람들의 슬프고 절망스러운 표정으로부터 비롯되었음을 깨닫는 어른들. 아이들이 장애를 가지고 있었던 것이 아니라 어른들의 슬픔, 절망, 포기가 크나큰 장애였다는 점을 깨닫게 된 어른들. 마침내 어른들은 아이들이 졸업 후에도 평생 함께 일하며 살아 갈 수 있는 공동작업장 ‘도토리의 집’ 건립을 위해 팔을 걷어 부친다. 연간 예산 6천만원 이상이 소요되고 스스로 20억원 이상을 모금해야만 하는 인간승리의 대장정. 부모들과 선생님들, 장애인단체들과 시민들에 이르기까지 헌신적으로 확산된 꿈은 드디어 사회적 공동체 ‘도토리의 집’이란 기적을 우뚝 세웠다. 도토리라는 등불을 들고 망망대해에서 노를 저어와 도토리 씨앗을 땅에 뿌려, 튼튼하고 우람한 나무가 되고 광활한 숲이 된 것이다.

Six-year-old Ataru steps on Elle's shadow during an impromptu game of shadow-tag; in Elle's culture, this is viewed as a marriage proposal. Eleven years later, Elle returns to Earth in order to marry Ataru — by which time not only had he forgotten the events of his childhood, but he was also going out with Lum. The rest of the plot focuses on Lum's attempts to prevent the marriage. The film was directed by Mamoru Oshii who was mad at the many requests that the producer made of him to alter the movie. Rumiko Takahashi considers this film her favorite and it is the most true to the original series.
