The film ABOVE THE DUST shows the life of contemporary Chinese rural areas and the historical changes experienced by rural families in a panoramic perspective. The film outlines the unique and sincere feelings between three generations in a delicate way, and also expresses people’s deep affection for land.

At the most difficult low point in Jue Xiao's life, Dai Chun's appearance broke through the darkness like a ray of sunshine. A story of a high school boy as he processes the loss of his first love and learns to experience high school over again. For 3 years of high school, JU Ran has silently had a love for a young girl in his class. At the end of his senior year, as the college entrance examination looms overhead, JU Ran's situation changes, and he is given the chance to repeat his senior year. Through this year, he studies again for the examination, and has a second chance at his high school experience. JU Ran's tale is that of growing up, and a caution to take joy in every moment, because even second chances are not perfect.

1976년 7월 28일 중국 당산. 인류 역사상 가장 끔찍했던 23초간의 대지진. 악몽 같은 지진은 한 가족의 운명을 송두리째 바꿔버렸다. 소박한 일상이지만 행복한 하루하루를 보내고 있는 일곱살 쌍둥이 ‘팡떵’과 ‘팡다’의 가족. 행복했던 그들에게 어느 날 갑자기 예고되지 않았던 시련이 닥친다. 바로 27만의 목숨을 빼앗아간 지옥 같은 대지진. 폐허가 된 도시, 수많은 생명이 죽음을 맞이한 아비규환의 현장에서 쌍둥이 남매는 극적으로 살아남지만 무너진 건물의 잔해 속에 묻히게 된다. 쌍둥이의 생존사실을 알고 구조대와 함께 아이들을 구하러 온 어머니는 자신의 목숨보다 소중한 쌍둥이 중 한 명만을 구해야 하는 운명의 선택 앞에 놓이게 된다. 가혹한 선택을 해야만 하는 어머니는 결국 아들인 ‘팡다’의 목숨을 선택하게 되고, 딸 ‘팡떵’은 죽음을 맞이해야 하는 채로 잔해 속에 남겨진다. 며칠 후, 죽은 줄로만 알았던 ‘팡떵’은 다른 구조대에 의해 발견되어 지진사망자 보관소에 버려지지만, 죽은 아버지 곁에서 기적적으로 살아나게 된다. 폐허가 된 지진의 잔해 속에서 살아남은 소녀. 한 순간 운명이 바뀌어버린 남겨진 소녀의 운명적인 이야기가 시작된다.

자폐증을 앓고 있는 아이가 부모 없이 남겨진다면 그 아이는 홀로 이 세상을 살아 갈 수 있을까? 다푸는 올해 22살로 아버지가 일하는 수족관에서 수영을 할 때가 제일 행복한 자폐아다. 아버지는 말기암 선고를 받고, 홀로 남겨질 아들을 위해 동분서주하지만 아들을 믿고 맡길 곳을 찾기가 그리 쉽지가 않다. 이연걸이 지고지순한 아버지 역을 맡아 액션이 아닌 전통 드라마 연기를 보여줘 화제가 된 작품.

Written by Liu Zhenyun, based on his own novel of the same title, the film revolves around two successful men whose marriages were wrecked when their wives uncovered their extramarital affairs through traces left in their cellphones. More broadly, the film explores the role of cellphones in interpersonal relationships in modern China, where the rapid development in information technology is having huge impacts on the way people communicate.
