Patrick Morel has his limits tested when he's thrown in jail after a misunderstanding with the lovely Sonia and the brash Youssef, all three of them bound for deportation until a last-ditch escape frees them in more ways than one.

Famous TV news anchorman Pierre Nivel left Algiers for France in 1962. That's been a secret; his Paris co-workers have never known that he was formerly an Algerian pied noir. An Algerian delivers an urgent message to Pierre from a Leïla Jalal... Algiers, 1962. The Nivels live in the same apartment building as the Moslem Jalal family. Lycée student Pierre is in love with their daughter, Leïla. The civil unrest in Algeria is heating up and violence is spreading in Algiers. At school, Pierre is friends with a Moslem student, Issam, but he is made fun of for that... Pierre's jet arrives in Algiers. As a celebrity, Pierre is met on arrival by a government official, Nader Mansour. Because of the civil war raging between the government and Islamic terrorists, they drive into the city in a heavily armed convoy. Pierre does not tell Mansour his real reason for returning: Leïla has asked him to help her daughter Amina escape to safety in France.

In this French comedy, the young adult children of working-class Arab immigrants living in the projects of suburban Paris endeavor to find a suitable cultural identity. The story centers on four young men in their 20s: Farida, who tries to live according to family traditions; his rebellious sister Souad, who wants to be as Westernized as possible and works at a fast-food outlet; her ex-boyfriend, Jean Luc, who wants to be an immigrant lawyer; and his friend Moussa. The film is comprised of brief incidents from their lives.

Jacques Belin, presenter of a silly TV show, gets drunk after receiving an award and misses the train bringing his TV-soap-star fiancée. He meets up with Frède, just out of prison after a three year sentence and, in between numerous arguments and Jacques' break-up with his girlfriend, the two of them get drunker together, going across Paris in search of more alcohol and adventure.

새벽5시 크사비에는 휠립이 세라노를 살해했으니 알리바이에 대해 조력해 줄 것을 요청 받는다. 현장에는 모르경감과 페르네 경감이 있었고 세라노 문서가 없었다고 한다. 크사비에는 퐁다리로부터 사회각층의 스캔달이 수록되어 있는 문서를 되찾아야겠다는 말을 듣는다. 이 문서를 뺏기 위해 휠립은 세라노를 살해했고 문서는 그의 애인 바레리의 아파트에 두었다. 크사비에는 문서를 수하물보관소에 감추려고 차를 몰다 추적자에 의해 실패하고 발레리에게 맡기며 다음날 몽파르나스역에서 만나기로 약속한다. 휩립은 살해당하고 그의 아내는 문서를 찾아 돈을 벌려고 한다. 크사비에는 문서에서 휠립이 공격의 목표임을 알고 놀란다. 크사비에는 휠립의 아내 아파트에 약소기간에 가나 그녀는 누군가에 의해 추락된다. 크사비에는 문서의 일부를 메스콤에 넘겨 관련자들은 혼란에 빠진다. 톰스키사장은 크사비에를 설득키 위해파티에 초대하나 크사비에는 헌팅중 암살직전에 모면한다. 발레리는 크사비에를 구하고 퐁다리부터하들의 총격전에 말려 죽게된다. 크사비에는 휠립의 살해자가 모로임을 알고 역광장에서 모로를 향해 총에 불을 뿜는다.

자신이 백인이고 천주교인임을 자랑스럽게 생각하고 그외의 다른 사람들에 대해서 지독한 편견을 갖고 있는 피베르는 차를 타고 여행에서 돌아오던 중 교통사고를 당해 차와 같이 물에 빠지게 된다. 유태인 기사는 안식일이라 일을 할 수 없다고 떠나고, 밤이 되어 그는 혼자 먼 곳의 불빛을 찾아 어느 공장으로 들어간다. 그곳에서 어떤 독재 아랍공화국인들이 슬리만이라는 쿠테타 음모자를 묶어 놓고는 심문하는 광경을 목격하는데 그것 때문에 결국 슬리만과 함께 쫓기는 처지가 된다. 그러다가 그들은 우연히 미국 뉴욕에서 파리에 다니러 온 야곱이라는 유태인 랍비와 그의 보조 랍비인 샤뮤엘의 옷을 빌려입고 유태인 구역으로 간다. 야곱 랍비를 기다리고 있던 유태인들은 피베르를 의심없이 야곱 랍비로 알고 열렬히 환영한다. 유태교에 대해서 아무것도 모르는 그가 랍비 행세를 하자니 여간 고충이 아닌데 마침 그의 유태인 기사가 나타나 그를 도와준다. 그러는 사이에 독재정권에 항거하는 슬리만의 쿠테타가 성공해서 슬리만은 대통령으로 추대된다. 피베르는 자신의 딸과 첫눈에 사랑을 느낀 슬리만을 주저없이 사위로 맞아 드린다. 그동안의 작은 모험들이 유태인과 유색인종에 대한 그의 편견을 깨트리는 것이다.
