Following an unpunished crime, a village of fishermen in northern Morocco is rising up around Simo against the local drug boss.

The film is about the suffering of a mother with one of her sons who asks her to sell the family home, one of the traditional old houses, to repay his debts, but she categorically refuses to bow to his request in favor of the "commandment" of her husband, who recommended before his death to keep the house.

The film is notable for presenting a more human Jesus, compared to more solemn portrayals in earlier films; here Jesus laughs and cries like anyone else. Satan also shows Jesus images of wars and destruction carried out in his name. The film adds an apocryphal Roman historian named “Livio” who watches and comments as events unfold; he is presumably named after Livy.

After her mother's death, a little girl calms her sadness and anxiety with the traces of her mother's perfume on her pillow, while the father revives his desires on his wife's perfumed dress. After spraying the last drop of the perfume, the quest for a similar scent begins with the hope of finding relief and ending their pain.
