고집 센 소녀 켄자는 아버지 위라, 할아버지 웰조와 함께 퀴라소 섬의 시골 마을, 자동차 폐차장에 살고 있다. 위라는 단호한 성격의 이성적인 경찰인 반면, 웰조는 퀴라소 섬 원주민과 섬의 정령에 자신을 동일시한다. 웰조가 정령의 세계로 가는 죽음을 준비하고 싶어하자 위라와 웰조의 사이는 점차 악화되고, 11살 켄자는 이들 사이에서 자신만의 길을 찾기 위해 애쓴다. 켄자는 이제 아빠 위라가 보여주는 현실적이고 회피적인 성향에 만족하지 못하게 되고, 점점 신비롭지만 자신에게 위안을 주는 할아버지의 전통에 매력을 느끼게 된다.
